GE Category Sequencing?

Does anyone (students) know how much flexibilty there is with regards to taking the GE Required classes?

The Engineering School has a suggested flowchart/listing for each semester, showing what classes a student could/should take in order to graduate in 4 years, and complete all required Engineering and GE classes.

Example, it had a Cat-1 GE class in the Fall/2006 semester. It had a Cat-VI GE class in the Spring/2007 semester (along with the required Writing-340). Our son followed this class selection, after receiving advisement from his advisor.

The suggested Sophomore GE class is a Cat-V class.
The suggested Junior GE class is a Cat-II class.
Is USC flexible, and a student can swap those GE classes?
In other words, can a Cat-II class be taken in the Sophomore year instead of the Junior year. (and visa-versa).

The answer is probably "yes". We would prefer not make an assumption - that may be incorrect. We would rather know with certainty what the options are.

Thanks

other than Cat VI which has the Writ 140 required co-enrollment (except in the case you are an architecture, music, or mechanical engineering major), the GE's are pretty flexible.

i'm following the recommended schedule because it saves me the trouble of having to structure my entire schedule...however, i have deviated from it in certain cases because of classes that i've tested out of, etc. for example, the schedule says that i should have taken one GE last semester, but i took two since i tested out of chemistry.

I've completely destroyed their "recommended" schedule and taken everything absolutely out of order, and the only adverse effect so far is just, every semester, my advisor bugging me to finish all my GE's :)

You just have to be somewhat aware of when things are offered, etc, so that if you deviate from the advised plan you'll be still on track to graduate.
