GEAR Class of 2021: University of Rochester (Graduate Engineering at Rochester)

Hi, I am a student applying to GEAR. There hasn’t been a GEAR thread on CC for a couple of years. Here is a place where we can discuss and swap info about the GEAR program and admissions process.

What types of engineering interests you guys? Feel free to join the conversation.

I applied to GEAR. I want to do biomedical engineering with a focus on neuroengineering.

Anyone know when we are supposed to hear back?

I got an email today saying I’m one of fifty finalists. Anyone else?

I did, as well. Congratulations!

@DMB155 You too! Are you going to stay overnight on Monday?

I am not sure yet, but probably not.

I did as well, and I’ll probably be staying overnight.

Do you guys know how many people get accepted to GEAR each year? @DMB155 @JemmaSimmons

@AlenaGT3 I was told when I called that there is no set number. There are 50 finalists invited to interview, and if each person does well in said interview, everyone could be admitted. We are no longer competing against others. Now, how many people ultimately end up in the GEAR program, I don’t know.

thanks @JemmaSimmons good luck!

Has anyone heard any more details about the interview? Are we supposed to prepare anything?

@JemmaSimmons not a GEAR applicant, just creeping on every UR thread haha, but neuroengineering!! that sounds awesome. i want to major in neuroscience & do research (don’t really like engineering) but neuroengineering just sounds so freaking cool!

@neuromaniac Haha thank you! I think so too  . I think of it as taking our knowledge of neuroscience and using it to improve shortcomings with the human body, be that paralysis, concussions, or other issues. I’m interested in neuroprosthetics.

That’s so cool! Haven’t even heard of that major, it’s sounds really interesting. Surprised we didn’t run into each other on Tuesday. @JemmaSimmons

these all sound amazing. so you guys are already accepted?

No, not yet, but it’s like a .1% chance that your not in if you were a gear finalist. Plus I’m a recruited athlete. Watch me be that .1% though lol @neuromaniac

hahahaha well congrats guys!! and good luck with GEAR of course!

Thanks! Hope you get in!

@AlenaGT3 Neuroengineering is a subset of BME, so I’d still be majoring in BME. We probably did run into each other Tuesday (and Monday night? I stayed over) and just didn’t know it, haha.
