Hey guys. I don't know if this is the correct section to post this so please administrators, move this as you see fit.

When you move from home to college in a boarding room, what do they provide you with? I'm assuming that no college gives the same stuff with boarding but I'm having trouble finding out what is offered by specific colleges or any college in general. I want to either go to University at Buffalo (SUNY) or New Paltz (SUNY) so if anyone can tell me what they offer boarding wise that would be great.

Do colleges allow for internet usage within boarding rooms? Do you need your computer to have a wireless card or is there wiring already installed in rooms? Is a bed provided (I'm assuming yes but I don't know anything). What about a TV/computer (I'm assuming no but I don't know anything)?

If anyone can link me to a thread that already answered most of what I wanted to know i would appreciate that as well.

I go to a SUNY school, and know many people that have, and generally what is offered (as I think with most schools) is:

Bed frame w/ mattress
Desk
Chair
Curtains
Closet and/or dresser (I had both, usually depends on size of the room)
Maybe a mirror

Some will have a carpet, but some will not, and you might want your own.

There is no tv/computer, though there might be in the lounge.

In my room, if you wanted to hook your laptop/computer to the wall outlet, you needed your own cable. There is a cable for the tv supplied though.

The rooms have wireless, but again, I believe there is an option to hook it up to the wall. I did for a while. There was really no difference. I think most new laptops are wireless capable.

I think phones in rooms are pretty much dead, unless you especially request one? Everyone I know uses there cell phone.

Hey, thanks for the response. I'd like to hear more room briefings from others to see if there's a difference that should bring worry. When I go to college I plan on getting my own computer to bring with me a long with my gaming systems. I can do without a TV.

bedframe and mattress
dresser
desk
chair
closet or wardrobe type thing

are pretty universal for what you get. Internet will depend on the school. of course they allow you to use it in your room, it would be ridiculous if they didn't. some campuses are wireless and other times (like at mine) there isn't wireless in the dorms and you need an ethernet cable to hook up to your computer for internet. You bring your own tv and computer. There really isn't a difference between colleges...it's pretty standard.

Yes I do mean dorm rooms. Do the rooms have several outlets for internet? I plan on hooking up my computer and consoles to the internet at the same source. If not I could just always connect my consoles to the computer.

Thanks S0ad and hj0519; I'm still looking forward to more replies on this topic.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Still open to more responses even though I have a decent idea of what to expect when I get a room (preferably my own).

any more responses are going to say the same exact thing. go on the websites of the schools you're interested in and you'll most likely find the same information there, too.

Wow hj0519, thanks a lot for taking the time to find these for me. I don't need any more responses to this topic and the administrators can delete the thread if necessary. Thanks for all the responses guys.

You'll also probably need your own microwave and fridge. Contact your roomate before getting the stuff, and figure out who brings what so you don't have 2 of each type of appliance (thus, have one fridge but have your own separate food inside it)

It's cool, it took about five minutes - just had to search "residential life" on the websites and they came up right away.
