college roommate...

Hey guys. I'm gonna be going to UCLA this fall and I live in NYC so naturally I won't know anybody at school. I was just wondering for people who had strangers for roommates how you figured out like the appliances to bring such as tv, fridge etc. How did you figure out like who brings what and such? Thanks in advance.

Well normally the school will give you your roommates name and phone number in advance so you can call him/her and talk about it.

Be wary of TVs. I brought mine to college, only to find out my roommate hated TV and wouldn't pay half of the $45 / month for cable. You definitely want to try to get to know your roomy a little bit, to find out if you'll even need to bring a TV, microwave, fridge, whatever. We almost never used the TV, fridge, or microwave because we had all those on the floor already.

yeah, that's true. if you really don't wanna bring something and don't mind minor inconvenience, there will probably be many of the things on your floor lounge or in a friend's room. for example, no one will care if you use their microwave from time to time, as you really won't be using it that much. if your roomie lives closer than NYC then make them bring all the stuff. it's probably pretty hard to bring heavy appliances on a plane. otherwise, just contact them when you have their phone#/e-mail.

wait you need to pay extra for cable? i thought it was included in the housing plan, along with internet.

It might depend on the school, but I know at mine - cable is seperate.

at my school it's included

seems like that would be the easier way, then you wouldn't have the problems like femme1986 had.

I think it costs money at my school but thats fine because I do not want a TV in my room. The house lounge is the TV viewing area, movies can be watched on the computer. Its just not worth the cost of cable to me when its in the house lounge (and most TV is such a waste of time) and there will undoubtable be disagreements over it (different programs, someone wants to study, etc).
