If you are at the 75% in both SAT categories for a given school, what are your chances relative to the avg applicant?

This is a good question. I think that some people look at the 50% SAT ranges and think that the school is a target school if they are in the range. However, it is much easier to get into a school if you apply early decision or if you are a legacy, minority, athlete, development case, or VIP. An applicant during regular admission needs to be in the top fourth of the 50% range before they are a strong candidate. If you are at the middle of the 50% range, you are probably borderline. If you are below that, good luck. This is a tendency that is more pronounced as the school is more selective. For the extremely selective schools, it is a crap shoot anyway. For everyone accepted, there are four or five equally strong candidates who are not.

So, for example...

UCLA's avgs...
Verbal (570-690)
Math (610-720)

They accept 23%.

What would the chances be (generally) of someone with a 690 V / 720 M?

dufus3709, the chances are thrown off by out-of-staters applying to UCLA

so u can get in w/ a 570/610 if ur in-state w/ good grades

i assume ur chances are 690v/720m are 75%sh with good grades + ECs

hmm...75%tile & 75% chances...

obviously this wouldnt apply to more selective schools. would this be a good way of looking at schools around UCLA's caliber?
