I have a strong desire to major in economics, and I have narrowed it down to three schools that I wish to attend. They are UCD, UCI, and UCSD. I also only wish to attend for only four years. So out of these three schools, which one has the superior undergrad program for a major in economics, so that I am able to find a decent career that supports my major?

Also, Is majoring in economics for only a bachelors degree a wise choice? That's for finding a career and making a living compared to getting a MBA with graduate school.

I’d appreciate it if someone can expound upon this as well. Everywhere outside of College Confidential I’ve heard that an Economics undergraduate degree is only really helpful if one is planning on getting a doctorate in that field since many of the hard line economist jobs require the higher level of quantatative skill. So can one be an economist, or in a position very closely related to what economists do, with only a bachelors in the field?

Of the three UCs, I believe UCSD is ranked higher, but UCB and UCLA may be above UCSD. San Diego has 2 Nobel Laureates on the Econ faculty. My son’s going to Triton Day this coming weekend as an admitted student and the Econ Dept. has made extra effort to encourage him to talk to the Econ faculty and discuss the program, so I’ll let you know what we find out.

More importantly, what are the immediate job opportunities that I will have if I am a recent graduate from lets say, UCD for a bachelors in economics with no work experience?

To be frank, going to a school outside the Top-25 or so (along with some regional powerhouses) is not worth the opportunity nor the explicit costs. The increase in pay at most of these schools either don’t or just marginally justify the loss of 2 years’ salary and also going to a not-so-great MBA will shut you out from attending a better one in the future since most programs won’t admit those with an MBA already.

Would the UCs that I state be a Top-25? UCI UCSD or UCD? Even though it is not a top 25, would I still be able to find a decent career as a bachelors degree? Maybe in accounting after obtaining a CPA.
