Hey guys. I was looking at a lot of schools, and one thing I have been looking for is a intramural or club level sailing group. Now, I love sailing, but I have only sailed extensively for one summer a couple years ago. In other words, I am not very good.

Do you think I could still get into a club sport? I know they are supposed to be way more relaxed than varsity sports, but can you really get into them with little experience?

Now I’m not on an intramural or club team, but I often see them advertise “no experience required”, especially for intramurals, so I don’t think you need that much experience to be able to do it. It is more for just having fun and it isn’t as competitive.

Most club teams take anyone with an interest, and if they have enough team members of all levels may split into “A” group and “B” group levels. My son’s on his colleges club Triathlon team and they have kids of all abilities competing in competitions. It’s only when the team gets to the higher levels of competition (such as nationals) that require a certain level of qualification from each member to compete and only those who meet the point cut off are eligible to compete. If you have questions about any college sport club, look on their website and you will usually find a contact person for the sport. Contact them and ask!

It really depends on the sport and the particular school. One of my kids played men’s club volleyball. There are very few men’s varsity programs (unlike women) so many of the men’s club teams are quite competitive. Intramurals are another story-usually anybody can play. MLM is right-get in touch with the contact person for club sailing at the schools you are interested in and ask questions.
