I was wondering, do you have to be really good at sports to join IM teams at Yale? I would love to join the table tennis, badmitton or bowling teams, but I'm not very good. I also read that the IM games are extremely competitive, and represent RC pride. If so, does this make it really hard to participate in sports that you've had minimal experience in?

It depends on how desperate teams are: some need just a warm body. But if you happen to be in a college where there already are five super strong table tennis players (I believe only three or four actually compete), then it’d be hard to imagine how you could ask to take another person’s spot on behalf of your college. While it’s certainly not club-level competitiveness, it’s not a training camp either. I highly doubt you’d play table tennis or badminton for your college. Maybe bowling. Certainly the other, larger team sports can fit in people of more novice experience levels. Very popular “no experience needed” is inner tube water polo. Football, soccer, softball, hoops always need players.

Just talk to the captains during or after signups (they’ll advertise them for your college) and see if they need you. If you go in a college with weaker turnout, chances are likely you’ll be able to play a couple of games or more.

usually it only gets competitive if your college is doing very well (in the running for first place). Other than that, it’s very relaxed/accessible/just for fun.

Thanks everyone! So basically, I have a chance if my college isn’t very strong in the sport, but if there’s some great players, my chances are lower… Makes sense.
And not relating to IMs, is there a choir that someone can join if they’re not good enough for the a capella groups? Haha :)
