@Csilverm I am too in the same boat as you I just sent in my finacial aid papers last week… my parents do make a lot of money but I am hoping for some aid due to GW tiution cost is by far more than the 34 grand they thought they would have been paying at another school… but hopefully they give me money crossing fingers GW gave me til the 24th and i believe everything has to be postmarked by the 24th or on that day but just to be safe i’ll send it in that monday and I will call financial aid tomorrow telling them that I have til the 24th do you think they would do a rush? who determines aid anyway GW? or FASFA ? and does aid come from the schools endowment if so then everyone should get aid lol

@stifftree after sending all your forms how long did it take for financial aid to send you your package was it exactly 2 weeks?

After i faxed all the forms, it took about 12 days for them to complete my financial aid package… Keep in mind that it took about 3 days for them to receive and process the forms.

does anyone know if transfer students can get on campus housing?
also what’s the deal with registering for classes?

For anybody who cares I sent my declaration of intent / deposit on Saturday from NJ and I guess they received it or processed it today because I was able to make a NetID just now.

@sifttree

I called GWU about that it on Monday and was told that they should have a good number of spots for transfers. She didn’t want to go into detail though which kind of worries me.

@stiftree thanks how much did GW end up given you in free money?

@rubyshadesp3 and ellomeno- Awesome thanks! I think I’ll send it out Monday too just to be safe.

Wow guys, finally received my admissions packet today! It was postmarked June 14th, so I’m guessing they forgot to send me mine or something because I had asked them on Monday to re-send me a copy.

@ellomeno-I think a lot of students are probably in the same situation we’re both in. GW doesn’t do a great job communicating with students I’ve discovered. I spoke with someone today in financial aid, and she indicated that it takes them around 2 to 3 weeks to process documents. I asked her if it was possible to do a rush, but she indicated that there was nothing they could do, it’s just a long process. The weird thing is, the financial aid department sent me a copy of my financial aid package today, which is confusing because I spoke with two financial aid representatives and they both told me that because I was missing forms, they could not calculate my award package. I’m hoping this is just a preliminary thing because it isn’t nearly enough to get me through the year, which scares me a lot. Hopefully once they process my missing forms, I’ll be eligible for more aid? I think FAFSA determines how much and what kind of government loans we receive (in the form of Stafford loans, etc.), whereas GW determines what and how much in grant, work study, scholarship, etc. money we receive. I’m not completely sure on that though. Apparently, according to my mom, GW is third in the nation for granting students good financial aid, which is cool. I think that if we end up receiving weak financial aid packages, however, we can appeal and hopefully try to get more out of them.

Also, do you guys know how we determine our class standing? I’m not sure if I’ll be considered a sophomore or junior. 48 of my credits transferred, but I don’t know if all those credits will count towards my degree or not.

@stiftree-The housing department told me that juniors aren’t guaranteed housing, although it’s mandatory for sophomores to live on campus. Once we submit our applications, we are put into a pool consisting of other transfer students and we’re basically wait-listed (that is if you’re an incoming junior). He told me housing isn’t on a “first come-first served basis”; rather, we are picked from a pool and granted housing in that way. So the sooner you submit your application, the greater your chances of receiving housing.

@CSilverm we are def in the same boat, just two days ago I called asking how long would it take to receive my fin aid package, and just today I called and less than 10 minutes later i was emailed my package. It wasn’t a lot but then again i wasn’t expecting much since my EFC is pretty high… how much did you receive in ‘free money’ and the appeal? I wonder if that would really work… because that would be awesome

and same I don’t know if i am a rising sophomore or junior so far they have accepted 38 of my credits and I recently just submitted my spring grades which have 14 units… I made an appt with my advisor so hopefully I will get more insight. I keep getting so many different answers and I want to know if I am a sophomore or junior for housing…because juniors as you know aren’t guaranteed… but they tell me if you had spent two years at another university you’re a junior… then I hear oh no you’re a sophomore so you’re guaranteed… so frustrating I guess only time will tell… I am sending my deposit friday so I can at least hold a spot for housing

@CSilverm and ellomeno, I have to say I was expecting a bit more from GWU in terms of my financial aid package (especially since GWU has a good aid package reputation). My EFC is pretty low, and I’m working on figuring out how to get the $11,500 I still need. My package pretty much covered tuition and slightly more. If anyone has any stories about 3rd party lenders please let me know. I’ve heard that there is a possibility to have some fed loans increased provided I was not already offered the max, but I don’t know.

FAFSA determines all federal based aid. This includes federal grants, loans, and work study. There is a limit on all three. GWU’s grants and scholarships are based on different traits (at least to my understanding). The major bummer, imho, is that to qualify for the Phi Theta Kappa scholarship you have to have at least 58 credits transferred with a minimum GPA of 3.8. After spring grades I have 59 with a 3.91 (62 with a 3.9? after summer), but I don’t know if that would count since the aid packages were already created. Does anyone know any details about this? Also, I know there is a limit on how much aid money we can receive (basically we cannot make money off of student aid), but does anyone know the actual limit? Is it the school’s estimated total of books, tuition, room and board, expenses, fees, etc. that comes out to over $58,000? I’m a bit confused about this and am trying to find an answer before I apply for any 3rd party loans.

From everything I’ve read and was told, housing views academic year differently than the rest of the university. Just like ellomeno said, if you have been in college for 2 years you are considered a junior no matter if you have 60+ credits or not. While juniors are not promised housing, someone posted on one of the facebook pages that housing told them they have never turned down a transfer student. Honestly, I share everyone’s frustration in not knowing what exactly is the case and wish the site was not so vague.

I have appealed financial aid packages before, but the only reason why I was successful was because of an income change at home. The problem with appealing GWU’s offer is the in-depth form we had to electronically fill out asked about current income. It’s not impossible, but there is a good chance they will deny an appeal unless something significantly has affected your family’s income (loss of job or hours, sudden illness, etc.).

@rubyshadesp3

I am sorry about that, but $11,000 out of pocket is not bad but then again you said you have a low income… I feel if I sent mine in on time I would’ve recieved more aid but I was always never sure since my parents do make a lot, but the amount I recieved was still pretty low compared to the actual cost of admission.

also Ruby it is estimated to be higher… because I doubt (or maybe) i would be spending 1,000 a year on transportation lol maybe $500-600 but that’s just a guess I plan on walking A lot and the metro has cheapeer prices during non rush hour times…

also which appeal form are you talking about? the form is pretty simple I spoke to fin aid this morning and it’ sjust the special condition form you fill out and fax? or is there another form which I don’t know about… I hope they accept my appeal it would really lessen the burden for my mom and I can get more spending money haha

I hope I get decent housing or a decent roommate especially being considered in 3rd year housing everyone have definitely made friends and paired up and i don’t want to be stuck with someone who i don’t know I guess we’ll see I really hope thought that GW is worth all this I know it is but I just feel they neglect transfers I bit too much compared to the others schools I was accepted too and spoken too… just saying

Received the financial aid information, and it’s brutal. My EFC is a bit too high to quality for much, but since I’d be leaving the workforce to return it would suck.

Anyway, I’m off to Columbia GS in NY. Good luck to y’all!

@ellomeno
I got about 32k in scholarships and grants

Yeah I feel like based on my EFC I should have received more FA… have no idea if my stuff being late had anything to do with it.

How are you guys doing the appeals? is there a form?
and do you think you can still appeal even if you’ve already accepted the FA online?

@Stiftree,
what was your EFC? Is your 32k including Federal pell grant? The scholarship u mentioned was it included in your admission status online or just in the financial aid package?

@stifitree you can still appeal even thought you accepted I just spoke to an awesome lady in the fin aid office and you fill out the Special Cond Form and you have to meet 1 of the 5 criterai to be abel to appeal- such as loss of job… etc

@VAsquare

yeah it was including pell grant, and everything was posted online.

@ellomeno
awesome, do you know where i can access this form?

[GW Financial Aid for New Undergraduates](http://gwired.gwu.edu/finaid-n/Forms/)

7th one on the list

@ellomeno, yeah, I don’t think $11,000 is too bad per year (despite the fact it’s almost 1/3 of my family’s income). I went into this knowing that 3rd party loans would be needed. I know there are people on here who think that spending anything over $20,000 for an undergraduate degree in the social science is crazy, but I disagree. With that said, my EFC was just over 1400, so I expected to get a little more. I have no qualms about taking out 3rd party loans (I’d obviously like to avoid it if possible) since GWU’s offer was the second most affordable. The other would have been a state school that I truly do not know if I would be happy there. A state school in VA and a private school in IL would have cost me about double the amount of GWU.

The form I am talking about is when we filed our financial aid. The one that we had to pay more money to officially complete in addition to the FAFSA. It asked a wide range of financial questions including what we anticipate incomes to be this year. The special conditions form is based on if you’ve had an income change or unexpected hardship since filling out the fafsa and other form. Did the lady mention if the fact that you’re moving out of state, and thus leaving your job for school counts as a change in finances?

@Rubyshadesdep omg ruby thank you I didn’t even think to add that part about movin out of state and not having a job thanks!! and yea the CSS profile that was sooo lengthy and ****ing anoying glad I never have to see that again, I thought the FAFSA was bad…

but I am appealing my aid and now I have another thing to add on thanks!

how do you know when your deposit has been processed and you’re cleared to get your email address and such??

Just got my admit packet today. Thank God someone in admissions emailed me a declaration of intent awhile ago…so I could register for classes.

Yankee how long did it take for them to process yoru intent & deposit?
