I’m currently locked in a bit of a struggle choosing between NYU and GWU, and I really need an objective perspective on the matter. Honestly, I know I’d be happy at either school, but I want to make sure I make a decision without any sort of regret.
I’m interested in History and International Affairs, and want to double major in these fields. At GWU I was accepted into the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (I’m aware that I’d be able to take classes/major within the Elliot School of International Affairs as well.) and the Core Program in Liberal Studies at NYU. I originally applied to the College of Arts and Sciences, and was confused and mildly disappointed to learn that I got into LS, especially because there is a type of stigma that exists around the school because NYU uses it to keep admissions high at CAS (To my understanding, it has its advantages including study abroad and after 2years I would be able to seamlessly transfer into CAS. A lot of people seem to like it as well.). I’m not very knowledgeable about the program, but have gotten a little suspicious about it through articles like this: http://nyulocal.com/on-campus/2011/02/07/the-liberal-studies-program-explained/
At GWU I’ve been offered a substantial amount of merit aid, but my parents have made it clear I can afford to go to either college without any financial troubles. I’ve visited and loved the school very much, especially because of its location in Foggy Bottom, which feels like the very heart of the nation.
I at first was reluctant to go to NYU because I live just outside of New York City and feel like I’ve spent my whole life there. Although I love NYC, I’m weary of going to school there because I feel as if I’d never get out afterwards. NYU seems to have much more prestige than GWU, which is a major reason to consider it for me, I feel as though a lot of people don’t know about GWU whereas NYU has global renown.
Both schools have evolved from “commuter schools” over the last few decades, and are continuing to expand today. I felt like a lot of construction was going on at GWU, and wonder if their prestige and reputation would grow in the years after I graduated after I attend. They had a controversial president, Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, who seemed to increase their admissions and reputation primarily by increasing tuition and making people assume it was better because of it, and the place seems to have some trouble facing some of the budget problems he created with rapid expansion. NYU on the other hand seems to be pretty stable and have a good administration.
I’m also really drawn by the opportunities to get internships and work experience within Washington, and GWU seems unbeatable in regards to setting people up with opportunities within the fields of government and IA. I get that NYU offers great opportunities too, but they seem better if you want a job in finance or business.
Overall, I’d really appreciate any insight on any of the points I’ve made and on the two schools in general. Thanks!
