Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Personal essay: 9. Talked about a book I forced 16 friends to read last year, demonstrating along the way my passions for many things and my enthusiasm in chasing what I love.
School of Foreign Service Essay: 9. Discussed Human Trafficking and my experiences in Ethiopia. Might not have addressed the question as perfectly as it could, but it did a great job of coloring my perspective of the world
Extracurricular Essay: 10. Funny, irreverent, discussed my comedic improv troupe.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 10. From my math teacher, he adores me and is a very persuasive writer, although I haven’t read it.
Teacher Rec #2: 10. From my APUSH teacher, and I really shined in that class. The type to write “best student I’ve ever had” in it, as well as go in depth on how I think and process history.
Counselor Rec: 8. Good, it’s probably very positive, but doesn’t address me in a very personal or descriptive manner due to us not being incredibly close.
Additional Rec: 9. My ASB director wrote it, and because I’ve worked closely with her for four years it has a great insight into my leadership and interaction with peers.
Interview: Awesome! We mainly talked about different items on my resume and how I hope to utilize what I’ve done and learned in the future. I really came off as being enthusiastic and bubbly, as well as well-read, and I generally interview well, so it wasn’t a major concern of mine.

Reflection

Strengths: Essays, leadership, personality shining through my application, experience volunteering in foreign countries, LORs, Interview, Consistent extracurriculars doing things I love
Weaknesses: no hook, only three years of language, my school only offers 7 AP classes and no IBs (I’m taking all 7 though), no previous attendees from my school, not a ton of consistent volunteering throughout the school year
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted: Not entirely sure. Hoping to be accepted through the Regular Decision round. My SAT was quite poor, but only because I decided to focus my energy on the ACT. I’m not superbly diverse, and I don’t blame them for leaving me to decide later.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted: Accepted at Tulane University. Only other place I’ve heard back from, but I’ll hear from UChicago (my other top school besides Georgetown) on Monday! Wish me luck!

General comments:
Super bummed I’m deferred, but still maintaining hope that I’ll be accepted late. I’ve done everything I could, and can’t be upset with myself for that!

Decision: Deferred

Objective:

ACT (breakdown): 30 (E: 34, R: 34, M:29, S: 22 – submitted more recent scores with a 29 on science but lower on all other categories)
SAT II: n/a – interviewer actually noted that not many kids regionally take subject tests and schools don’t discuss them often. It’s a regional problem but still not an excuse, I know.
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.88
Weighted GPA: not sure?
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 10%
AP (place score in parenthesis): World History (3)
IB (place score in parenthesis): Spanish (5), Math SL (5), IB Diploma Candidate
Senior Year Course Load: History HL, English HL, Computer Science HL, Chem SL, IB Theory of Knowledge, AP Calculus AB, AP Gov, gym, a tech elective
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): I won second in the nation for a competition in a club I’m in, does that count?

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Job/Work Experience: Run my own little web shops
Volunteer/Community service: Helped plan and lead three statewide leadership conferences for a club I’m in, State level leadership positions for a tech-based non-profit organization, student mentor, school tour guide.
Summer Activities: Competed nationally in a competition, went to a computer science camp once (but nothing super prestigious), attended some leadership trainings
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I was super proud of them but I guess now it’s time to reconsider…
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10/10 - My teacher knows me really well and has been with me at both my highest and lowest times. He’s an advisor for one of my clubs so he’s seen my leadership side too.
Teacher Rec #2: 8/10 - He’s the supervisor for my IB Extended Essay so he’s familiar with my academic work besides the typical schoolwork and he was my history teacher last year and I really aced his class. I’m also in a mentorship program and he’s the teacher in charge of it, so there’s also that. I don’t think he’s crazy about me but I know he likes me and I heard he writes awesome recommendations.
Counselor Rec: 5/10 - He didn’t have anything bad to say and he’s been at the school for quite a while but I had a specific counselor freshman-junior year but then they transferred me to him because they redid their department or something. He just didn’t know me that well.
Additional Rec: I didn’t know we could submit an extra one!
Interview: Not bad enough for her to have anything bad to say but not good enough for her to have anything great to say.

Other

Reflection

Strengths: I really thought my essays were awesome but now I’m rethinking…
Weaknesses: Interview! It felt really dry, I froze up a bit, and my interviewer made me feel a little…rushed? I’m not sure how to describe it. My test scores are also low.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted:
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted: Accepted to UT Austin (automatic admit off class rank), haven’t heard back from anywhere else)

General comments: Super bummed! It’s my top choice school but at the same time I would have been surprised if I was accepted early. If anyone has any advice or is willing to review my essays, I would appreciate it if you shot me a message. Really hoping to get in this spring!

I poured some heart into it and talked about an issue that affects me on a very personal level), Activity Essay (7/10, my weakest one, but it was still ok I think)

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 8/10, advisor for a lot of my clubs
Teacher Rec #2: 7/10, had a great relationship with him.
Counselor Rec: 7/10, I think/hope they really like me. I got to a big school though so you never know how generic or specific these things can be.
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: 7/10, it wasn’t perfect by any means, but I thought I did ok. Just be very polite, but still talkative if that makes sense. Have answers prepared, but I think having questions prepared to ask the interviewer is just as important.

Weaknesses: Essays could have been stronger (besides the SFS one), Interview wasn’t standout great
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted: I really focused on IR in my ECs, essays, etc. I made it very clear why that was important to me. I think demonstrated interest in your major is very good.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted: None yet. I’m only applying to a few other schools now that I have this one under my belt.

General comments:
JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER THAT COLLEGE DOESNT DEFINE WHO YOU ARE OR WHAT YOU ARE WORTH
I know that’s easier said than embodied but please never forget that. Be proud of who you are and what you’ve accomplished regardless of what colleges think of it.

Advice:

  • Start your essays as early as you can. Like Junior year. I regret cramming to finish my personal statement very much.
  • If you are applying to SFS, write your school-specific essay on something that relates TO YOU! Don’t write about some random issue unless you have a personal connection to it. Be passionate!
  • Visit colleges before the fall of your senior year if possible.

Reflections: I really really really like Georgetown and I wish I would have gotten in EA. It really hurts especially because one of my friends (who loves to humble brag) got in with much lower scores, an equal GPA, and really bad essays that he wrote the night before they were due. He knows I really want to go there and I’m kinda salty they chose him over me. This guy is literally URRHHHHHGHGHHGHGHHGHGHGHHGHGHGHHG. I have a karate competition this weekend and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna crush everyone because of how mad I am that this kid got in EA. Seriously, it doesn’t hurt that much that I didn’t get in (although I’m pretty disappointed), but that THIS KID OMG FIOSIOFHSIOHFDSH GOT IN MAKES ME SO MADDDD.
Strengths: Good ACT, decent GPA, well rounded, multiracial
Weaknesses: eh ECs, essays I didn’t want to submit but my college counselor made me, didn’t submit SAT IIs (THIS IS IMPORTANT PLS SUBMIT WHAT EVER YOU HAVE EVEN IF IT SEEMS BAD)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: my weaknesses
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted - LMU and UChicago (which I’m kinda happy about but not sure I want to go because Georgetown is my first choice and I really wanna go PLS IF UR READING THIS LET ME IN AD COM PLS I WILL CHANGE THE WORLD WITH MY LANGUAGE SKILLS AND DIPLOMACY) - only three places I applied early
No other deferrals, and no rejections

Places I applied regular (in order of where I last submitted): Tufts, Stanford, Columbia, Boston College, Claremont McKenna, USC (fight on, cas I’m probably gonna end up here if Gtown doesn’t pitty me and let me in), Brown, and UCs

General Comments: I’m genuinely happy for everyone that got in, like seriously it makes me happy to know that some of my fellow 2021ers were successful this time around (except that fam friend, he sucks and is rubbing it in my face as we speak - snapchats of his acceptance letter - “hey dude look!” “Did u get in? I hope you did cas we can be hoya buddies” got it’s so nerving). I wish all of you luck in chosing the right place, and as for everyone else that got stuck in this deferral boat, good luck to you all and hopefully we can join the hoya fam!!! Please from st francis highschool

Reflection

Strengths: Letters of recommendations, SAT scores were pretty good (in comparison to the applicants in PR), course load (I took the highest number of AP classes offered at my school), commitment to community service, the fact that I visited the university around 3 times, my diverse background
Weaknesses: Subject Tests, GPA (there were other people from my school applying that had higher GPA’s)
Why you think you were accepted: Cultural diversity, letters of recommendations
Where else were you accepted: Boston College, Northeastern Honors Program & Fordham (applied RD to UPenn & Notre Dame)

General comments:

I was surprised that they accepted me, especially under EA. When I read the acceptance rate had been lower than ever for the Class of 2021, I was sure they were gonna defer me, but I was still hopeful and positive. Georgetown had always been kind of my dream school and I don’t get tired of reading the letter. Good luck to everyone in RD!

Job/Work Experience: I work at a consignment store but I started after I sent in my application

Summer Activities: Foreign Exchange program to Spain for a month
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Essay about me was about a family house in France and how it represents my connection to my home country/how I’m no longer ashamed of being ~different~ (I’d rate about 7). SFS Essay (8, I wrote about global poverty and how education could be a solution). Finally, for the activity one I wrote about Model UN and running the club for two years (I’d rate it a 7/8, it was very factual).

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Math teacher (8, very good–included leadership abilities–but more statistical than personal)
Teacher Rec #2: Spanish teacher (9, very personal and probably balanced out the math teacher one to make me look somewhat human)

Why you think you were accepted: My ECs as well as my essays (also I have the advantage of being multicultural)
Where else were you accepted: So far, Fordham, UMass Amherst, Northeastern, and UChicago

General Comments: Don’t take this as a mold you have to fit in. If you don’t think your stats match up (I didn’t) it doesn’t matter, you can shine through in other ways. Good luck to everyone!!

@LeCorbusier54 Just noticed you didn’t send your SAT I score. Were you worried about being caught or was it no big deal?

Where do I send my letter of continued interest? Or who do I send it to?

What was your major

Were we supposed to send a letter of continued interest? I just resubmitted for RD after being deferred early so it didn’t even occur to me to send a letter…
Would it be too late for me to do one? Maybe I can send it in with my art portfolio this week.

^Why did you resubmit your application?

I believe on my deferral letter it said that no further action was needed (except to take the SAT II and send scores, which I’ve done) to be considered for regular decision. Was not aware that they needed a letter of continued interest or that you had to resubmit your application. Does anyone else have any info on this?

@obghj2009 @ecrivain934 I had taken the opportunity to update my application with a new award and revise an essay after I was deferred because I logged in a few days before the Jan. 10 deadline to just see if there was anything else I needed to do. I don’t know if I resubmitted or just updated, or what, but I got another email after I had “resubmitted” saying that they received my application supplement.

I don’t think you have to “resubmit” unless you edited it.

@greetings12 thanks for the info! I’ll just be crossing my fingers until April then.

My daughter is very close to committing to Georgetown. She is in McDonough. I am mostly thrilled and there are just so many great things about Georgetown that we are excited about. Can’t wait for accepted students weekend.

My only insecurity is the social life…she’s really looking to bond with students in her dorm/classes and wants a more collaborative environment vs. competitive. She has talked to a few people that attend and they have sold her on the school and convinced her it is a warm place and not cut throat like some of the Ivies.

Anyone have any input on this?? I just want her to be happy.

@collegemomjam Congrats to your daughter! I remember reading some of your comments just before EA decisions, and looks like she already has amazing options. Its my #1 too, but I’ve already been deferred, so not looking too good.

I can’t comment on the social life personally since I’m just another prospective student, but it seems that everyone has a different opinion. Many current students on here have said its more collaborative in a good way, but there is also a recent post from someone that hates it. I guess it depends on the person. Good luck with decisions!

I’m in my junior year and I’m an IB Diploma candidate too!! Just started TOK a month ago. rip
