Any suggestions for restaurants (casual and dressy) for us when we go to Georgetown to visit our incoming freshman?

Thanks!

On our visit we ate at The Tombs.

The Tombs is great for a quick lunch or early dinner. It’s only about 2 blocks from the main gate.

We like Clydes on M Street - good food and reasonable prices.

For Sunday brunch, it’s hard to beat Martin’s Tavern on Wisconsin. It’s where JFK asked Jackie to marry him. In fact, when you make a reservation, you can request the booth where the proposal took place.

Definately eat at the Tombs one time while on campus.

Thanks for the suggestions! The Tombs sounds like a good lunch option for move in weekend. Has anyone tried Filomena’s or 1789?

Thanks for the ideas!

We ate at Filomena’s on our visit in May. Loved it! Portions are huge, though. Could have done without the appetizer and maybe shared an entree. The cheesecake was phenomenal but had to take most of to go and finished it for breakfast.

Share an entree at Filomena’s! It’s really good, but huge portions!

Founding Farmers is our favorite but it is a cab ride from the Georgetown campus. Zaytinia is good for mediterranean food but a little farther out. In Georgetown, there is a great little pizza parlor very close to campus for a casual dinner called Pizzeria Paradiso. As previously mentioned, Clydes is consistently good food. Unum is also very good in Georgetown. There are many great places to discover - I can’t wait for parent weekend 2013!

If it’s nice out (and you are used to walking places), walking from campus to Founding Farmers is totally doable, and you’ll get to see all of Georgetown M Street along the way, plus get a feel for West End/Foggy Bottom.

Pizzeria Paradiso is great and has an awesome beer selection, especially Belgian stuff.

NB: 1789 is only open for dinner.

Tombs is a must, of course. I prefer J Paul’s over Clydes, but they’re very similar. Martin’s Tavern beats both of them, though, both in terms of the historic value/ambience and in the food department (unless you really want oysters, in which case go to J Paul’s).

I’ve only had drinks at Unum, but I’ve heard very good things. Bourbon Steak is probably the best steakhouse in DC, but it is wicked expensive.

I haven’t tried out Capitol Prague yet, but I had some of their food during EU Embassy Open House day, and it was very authentic. So if you’re in the mood for some Central European cuisine, by all means check it out.

Kafe Leopold’s is tucked away in Cady’s alley but consistently gets high marks.

Malmaison just opened and looks very promising.

Wonderful suggestions, everyone! Thanks so much.

I would throw Thunder Burger in as a nice dinner place. I can’t tell you what street it’s on, but it isn’t far.

I forget the name, but there was a Thai/sushi restaurant a few block from the main gate. More on the expensive side (as is most Thai food), but worth it

Filomena is definitely good, and there’s a really good Asian fusion restaurant called Mai Thai. Tombs is a MUST. Clyde’s is good for a Saturday brunch. 1789: Fancy :)

Forgot to add: Founding farmers is absolutely delicious. it’s very homemade food-ish, and a really good brunch spot as well

This weekend, in the parents’ orientation paper work, there was a coupon for a free glass of wine at The Tombs. Myself and two other moms drank at the bar!

For a quick and healthy lunch - or any time of the day fabulous salad - you should go to Sweetgreens. The original location is on M Street but there are newer locations in Dupont, Foggy Bottom, Glover Park and others. The M Street shop really doesn’t have much seating but the others do.

It was started by a couple of Georgetown seniors (Yes, they were still undergrads!!) looking for healthier alternatives five or so years ago. It’s now a terrific chain of really fresh, locally sourced and organic ingredients, with interesting and delicious salads and frozen yogurt.

Here’s what I had while dropping off my senior for her last year of schol:(

organic arugula + shredded kale with local watermelon, heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, organic mint, local feta, spicy sunflower seeds, champagne vinaigrette

YUM!!

Farmers Fishers Bakers (down by the waterfront) is great too, and not terribly expensive (entrees range from about $10 for a burger to around $25-30 for a steak). I definitely recommend it.
