Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Education Essay for Georgetown College (8): I wrote about how being educated not only knowing a lot of information but also how applying what you have learned to real world problems is how one becomes truly educated. I described by experiences of being educated by watching Jeopardy every night and how I want to use my college experiences to find a solution to the paper vs. plastic straw dilema.
Creative Essay: (10) I used this essay also for my common app and wrote about how I started my massive deck of cards collection. I started after I self taught my self texas hold’em by watching my cabin mates and eventually became the best in camp. I ten needed a new deck of cards and bought a coca-cola deck at the coke museum in Atlanta and subsequently began collecting decks from my travels. This essay showed a creative side of me along with my analytical skills.
Extracurricular essay (7): I wrote about how USTA tennis has provided me with numerous experiences even beyond playing matches. From making friends to traveling to unexpected locations, I talked about how tennis is something that has always been special to me.
Ability Essay (5): I wrote about how I have become very good at multitasking. Kinda cheesy but I have always felt like this is an essential skill of mine.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: English Teacher/Advisor/Tennis Coach (10): Not only did my first reccomendor teach me AP English Language during my Junior year, but she was also my school tennis coach and adviser and definitely spoke about my growth over time in high school and numerous highlights.
Teacher Rec #2: Biology Teacher (9): My Biology teacher taught me in both 10th and 11th grade. I greatly enjoyed this class and she definitely enjoyed my insightful and lighthearted comments. This was definitely a good reccomendation.
Counselor Rec: (8) I am not really sure about this one. Although she was my leader on a school backpacking trip and could speak about many experiences from the trip, I don’t know how much she really knew about me before the trip other than like 3 meetings. She definitely knew I was a good student and could probably write about that.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: (8) This was my first college interview and I think I did a good job. I answered all questions based mostly of my resume that I brought and I think I elaborated when necessary.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Personal Essay -8/10- My experience living in Mexico City and overcoming my social anxiety while needing to be the translator for my parents to the point where I love the art of communication. It was pretty strong.
Meaningful Activity- 7/10- Talked about learning about conflict and critical thinking and perspectives during debate. It wasn’t bad but I just don’t think it was anything special.
Nursing and Health Sciences Essay- 10/10- I poured my heart and soul into this essay talking about why I wanted to go into healthcare because of my experience living in Mexico and seeing things that a lot of people from my background don’t. I had a few very intense personal anecdotes that I thought made the essay strong.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: AP Chem teacher. I had her sophomore and junior year. Our AP Chem class was really small so we had a good relationship and she knows a lot about me outside of school. 9/10
Teacher Rec #2: My AP Lang teacher from junior year. I did well in her class and she liked me but she doesn’t know me super well. 7/10
Counselor Rec: I go to a really big school so our counselors don’t know us super well but we fill out brag sheets and spent like 45 minutes talking about the answers to a survey to help her with writing it. She also had my brother so she knows my parents and family relatively well. 8/10

Interview: It wan’t fantastic. I’m not a great interviewer and it was pretty short but the interviewer was really nice and young and we did talk about some interesting things so I think I left a pretty decent impression.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have no idea I was completely expecting to get deferred. Teacher Rec #2: Physics, anywhere between 7 and 9 based on his mood
Counselor Rec: He said that he wrote something along the lines of any institution would be making a huge mistake not admitting me (an “extraordinary young man”) based on a few slips in my grades (circumstances).

recommendations:
1: Junior year AP Biology teacher. We had a great relationship and I was positive I was going to ask her for a recommendation.
2: Sophomore year AP World teacher. Known her since I was in 8th grade and honestly a second mom to me. Love her to death and I know she wrote me a great letter.
I got in to McDonough with a 31 and no sat subject tests also lol. You going?
I can’t believe I’m typing this right now:
Result: Accepted to Georgetown College, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics for a Linguistics major :)). Indicated I intended on double majoring in Justice and Peace Studies as well.
Also, I am only sort of following the format because I rarely read the big chunks of texts in the other format.

Awards:
- ranked 2nd place nationally for tap dancing

- National Honors Society
Recommendations:
- Teacher: French teacher who I had in 9th, and 11th-12th: I believe it must have been quite good, I have a long thank you note to write! She has always been very sweet to me, and I have to work really hard in her class but I make meetings with her so she knows how hard I try.
- College Counselor: I’m sure it’s kind, but we aren’t particularly close.
Essays:
- Skills/Talents: 9/10: wrote about teaching, I believe it was a unique take on the prompt
- Extracurricular: 9/10: wrote about GSA and was able to make it vulnerable by talking about my own sexuality
- Personal: 10/10: used my common app essay, emphasized aspects of intellectual curiosity
- Why Georgetown?: 9.5/10: quite proud of this one, mentioned specific courses I look forward to taking and spoke about an LLC I intend to join
Applied for Financial Aid? Yes
State: California
School type: Private, TINY French-immersion and IB school
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income bracket: middle class
Rank: 1/28
Hooks: interesting school, IB diploma, FLL, rank
Reflection:
- Strengths: essays, community service, teacher letter of rec, really strong grades/rank, leadership positions
- Weaknesses: test scores, nothing world-changing in my extracurriculars
- Why I think I got in: strengths listed above as well as the fact that I applied to the FLL which doesn’t seem to emphasize SAT scores as much (https://georgetown.app.box.com/s/z4tgwmps28jo4hd83i1migipgjw43uuo look at the distribution of applicants and admitted candidates)
Georgetown has been my dream school since freshman year, but I was considering not applying because I thought my chances were too low. If you want to go to Georgetown, just apply! You may be surprised!
Accepted into McDonough!! Couldn’t be happier! Is there any type of accepted students facebook page/group chat?
Decision: Accepted
Objective
SAT I: N/A
ACT: 34 (32 math, 35 science, 34 reading, 36 english)
SAT II: World History - 740
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Weighted GPA: 4.071
Rank: 1/500 (everyone who has a 4.0 is given rank #1 at our school. I believe my weighted GPA is 16th.)
AP: Japanese (5), World History (5), English Language & Composition (5)
Senior Year Course Load: APUSH, AP Macro/Microeconomics, APES, Calculus, Expository Writing/Literature, Chinese (year 4), Band (year 4)
Major Awards: Grand Champion at the ASTA National Orchestra Festival, eCybermission 2nd place state, Solo and Ensemble blue gold, AP scholar
Subjective
Extracurriculars: concert band (president/section leader/principal chair), concert orchestra, jazz band, symphony orchestra, marching band (section leader), wind ensemble (vice president), JSA (co-president, founded the chapter at our school), environmental club (vice president, co-founder), Chinese club (historian), NHS
Job/Work Experience: I’ve been working part-time at a local office supply store since last summer.
Volunteer/Community service: I was a student helper at a middle school summer band program. Most of my community service is through my extracurricular activities.
Summer Activities: I attended the NSLC program for International Diplomacy at Georgetown this past summer.
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Short essay (9/10) - I think this was my best one. I wrote about my experience at Georgetown this past summer using a Japanese proverb.
Personal essay (7/10) - I wrote about my experience moving from Japan to the U.S. and how it made me interested in a career in foreign service. Immigration essays are overused, but I think it was effective because I tied it to my passion.
SFS essay (6/10) - I wrote about the importance of giving all children access to quality education. The solutions I presented were very ordinary.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 10/10 - I asked my AP world history teacher from my junior year. I worked my butt off in her class, so I trust that she was able to write about my work ethic and passion for the subject.
Teacher Rec #2: 10/10 - I asked one of my band directors and he knows me better than any other teacher. I dedicate a lot to the music department, so I think he was able to write about my commitment and leadership.
Counselor Rec: 8/10 - She doesn’t know me very well, but I’ve been talking to her about college since my junior year and I’d assume she knows how motivated I am as a student.
Interview: I think it went well? The interviewer told me I was a good fit for the school.
Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Regional Studies at SFS
State (if domestic applicant): Hawaii
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Japanese
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Middle Class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A
Reflection
Strengths: Grades, ACT, AP scores, extracurriculars, attending a summer program at Georgetown, good teacher recs.
Weaknesses: My personal essay and SFS essay could’ve been better (I did both of them last minute). My SAT II score isn’t that great and I only took one out of the recommended three. My weighted GPA is relatively low (especially because my band classes give me extra credits).
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my app really showed my passion and character. The fact that I’m Asian and that not a lot of kids from Hawaii apply to Georgetown probably helped me a lot too.
is there a group chat for accepted students?
