Georgetown Pre-Med

I'm a student who was accepted at Georgetown, ND, and Northwestern. From Georgetown, I have received an unbelievable aid package, one that I really don't think I can justify turning down. I'm looking to major in Biology while also being on the Pre-Med track. While everyone has much to say about other Georgetown programs, there is not much said about pre-med. Does anyone have any opinions about Bio/pre-med here? Thanks!

Hey iamme,

I’m usually not around here but I was browsing and saw this topic come up, so I figured I’d post and help you out a bit. I’m currently a junior pre-med student at Georgetown. I can’t speak for the experience at other schools like ND and Northwestern but my guess is that they’d be very similar to what you’d find here. Georgetown does not get a lot of press for its science but I have received a great education here. That said, the program is very demanding. Many/most drop out either at the end of their frosh year or soph year after orgo. The pre-med classes are lecture format with maybe a little less than 200 in your Gen-Chem lectures, and dropping to 150 or so by the time you get to Orgo 2 and Physics. The biology and o-chem programs are especially strong as you go into far more depth than the typical undergraduate science curriculum.

I am currently getting ready for the MCAT and I can say that my Georgetown background has prepared me exceptionally well. While tough, the program is very rewarding and you will meet some of your best friends through it, as I have for sure. I have had to sacrifice many a weekend from going out, but it is the nature of the beast and you will have to get used to the demands of a high volume course load by the time you get to medical school. Nevertheless, you can balance a good lifestyle and still do the typical fun college things if you are disciplined. And chances are, if you are able to get into Georgetown you are probably able to find the discipline you need to do this.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
