i think georgetown may be one of the most underrated schools on the usnews list. any ideas as to why?? actually..tufts too.

the answer for both is: $$$$$$$
I agree gtown is ranked low; i think tufts is about right.

Georgetown and Tufts are not, by any means, ranked low.

Georgetown is #23 and Tufts is #27.

sounds about right to me

I think Georgetown gets a lower rating than it should because many of its professors are only visiting professors (M. Albright isn't too fond of fulltime, you see). And because it's programs are somewhat uneven. It's fantastic for international relations, but go somewhere else for physics.

hmm. i think you got john makes a good point. i mean, 23 is kinda low for a univeristy that most books consider part of the "elite" along with only the ivies ,duke, stanford, mit and cal tech.

I think his point was that georgetown has a lower rating because it is quite lopsided in its specialties

yes i understand that...btw, can smoeone exlpain to me the diff schools at gtown?

yes georgetown is low and that is because of its small endowment.

Only on CC is 23rd in the nation "low."

Only on CC and in the minds of thousands of overachievers in the US

its low because it lack money... thats the true answer... 23 is low when the school is commonly compared to the ivies and the other elite schools in the nation.

It lacks money and is a bit focused in its academics (lacking solid business/engineering programs).

It may be commonly compared to ivies, but so is every other school in the top twenty-five. Why is it such a big deal?

G'town is really hot right now but that doesn't necessarily translate into a high US News ranking - especially immediately.

The things that hurt it directly in US News are: faculty resources, faculty makeup (full-time vs part time) and money (financial resources as well as alumni giving).

because usnews is only sliiiiightly accurate in rankings, due to the fact there is absolutely minute differences between each ranking. georgetown would definitely be in the next tier underneath the schools that are universally accepted as the tops in the country.
usnews would be MUCH MUCH MUCH more accurate in grouping schools in tiers than individual rankings.

That's a really accurate observation. I definitely agree with this.

Gtown's ranking are indeed too low relative to schools like Emory, WUSTL and ND, which are overrated. GTown is one of the best private schools behind the top ivies.

But when you look at other CC top university boards, similar topics always pop up about some other colleges. It is really up to the individuals to decide instead of looking at USNews... I know a girl who though Clarkson College should be ranked as high as the Ivies... now, obviously that's not gonna happen...

just because georgetown became popular in the last 25 years (mainly due to patrick ewing) doesn't make it the best school in the country. The school has a lot of problems as you all are pointing out and it doesn't deserve to be ranked higher.
