Georgetown Transfer Questions

hey nspeds, what is the likelihood of someone with a terrible hs gpa of like a 2.2 with 2 years of credits of college gpa from a cc with a 3.7ish+ getting into georgetown with a really good essay, letter of reccs, great ec's, and all that jazz, etc getting in? or am i ruined because of my bad hs transcript?
I honestly don't know. I can tell you, though, that I was admitted with a 2.3HS GPA, but I really think I was an exception to the rule.

If anything happens (job, award, honor, etc.) between now and the time where adcom makes decisions about acceptance/rejection, should we send a letter to Georgetown or not?
If it's a major one, then yes. Otherwise, it is best not to exasperate the adcom with too many documents.

how did that happen? what was your act/sat? did you apply out of h.s. or did you go to a college, or cc and what were those stats? how many credits did you have? wow, what did you write in your essays?

Wow thanks nspeds, I sure hope you're right! and good luck with your app, at least you still have two weeks to perfect it. are you applying to other schools as well? when did you take your lsats? ugh, im not looking forward to those in the least bit haha :-/

Hello, your thoughts?

My college GPA is a 3.93 which is up from my 3.69 high school work. I have an SAT score of a 2130, with SATs in history and literature in the 720-750 range.

I am attending the University of Edinburgh overseas but am as US resident of Conn. I am working on solid essays but am not consumed in working with them. I'd like to major in English.

I am transferring because I feel limited over here and hope to satisfy intellectually curiosities that Georgetown's core practically caters to.

I have 5 "5s" in AP tests. My recommendations should be alright, they only had a semester to know me. I've got two letters of recommendations coming in from my highschool.

My other choices are Williams, Yale and Dartmouth. I am very interested in Georgetown and think Ive communicated it.

I'll chime in a bit later. I had a quantum physics exam around 20 minutes ago and I am sort of winding down...

phew.

I just sent in all my application materials today and of course I'm starting to wonder if I could have done it better of if I've made mistakes. This is a half chances thread and half will someone with experience please look over my essay and tell me if I was too personal in it. Here are my stats/resume:

Two community colleges - one in Illinois, the other in Kentucky.

IL CC: 3.56 GPA
KY CC: 3.6 GPA
Most of my pre-req's are done.
HS (average): GPA 2.475 (non-weighted) 2.525 (weighted)

No SAT or ACT ever taken and scores not required because I've been out of HS for more than 5 years (I'm 24)

Nspeds - my mid term grades came out today, and needless to say I dominated with a 4.0 flat. I'm a frosh at a top 20 lac with a 3.91 first semester, should I go ahead and make a mid-year grade template and send it in?
how did that happen?
I still ask myself that question.
what was your act/sat?
1490.
did you apply out of h.s.
Nope.
or did you go to a college, or cc and what were those stats?
Attended a four year school. I had a 3.92 (or 3.8something when I applied). I also had good reasons.
how many credits did you have?
33
wow, what did you write in your essays?
[/quote

Just my reasons, a small adendum accepting culpability for my actions in high school, and a small creative essay (it wasn't that creative, in retrospect).
are you applying to other schools as well?
Yes, but those apps are due in September.
when did you take your lsats?
I take them in June.

You have a good shot.
Hello, your thoughts?
I do not know how you would fare for the SFS, but you sound good for the college.

Your chances are decent. It depends on whether you communicated effectively how your ECs didn't allow you to earn a higher GPA at a CC, or on whether you communicated effectively why your GPA at a CC is not above a 3.7.

I think you are in at the college without a report; however, I would send one in just to show interest.

Keep the questions coming:)

Thanks, I applied to Mcdonough btw, except my scores are "average" 650m/650v/720w, 720 1c 680 us hist. Hopefully a 3.95 frosh GPA (with 2 300 level econ classes and 1 200 level philo class this semester) and a 3.9uw high school gpa can get me over the hump.

Yeah, you are probably in at MSB.

My my, the transfer admissions process here seems to be getting really competitive.

nspeds - you are a wealth of information! i am a jr. transfer applicant from an ivy league school with a slightly lower gpa...im hoping that the fact that i am at an ivy will help that a little, but i want to do as much as i can to boost my chances in other ways. i've seen a couple places people talking about submitting mid-semester grade reports even when they aren't required. I think that I will have between a 3.8 and 4.0 at mid-semester, so I am sure that this would help me. Is it okay to send in a report to gtown even though they do not require one? If so, what do I need to include? I have looked at a couple from other schools and currently have listed course, instructor/signature, current grade, additional comments. Also, should I include some sort of cover letter to express/reiterate my extreme interest in the school?

thanks!

I have a similar background as smiledarling's. I was also a linguist but in the USAF active duty for 4 years. I flew combat missions over Iraq and Afghanistan as an airborne Arabic cryptologic linguist. I just got out in Feb.

After I graduated high school, I attended a selective four year university. For reasons I believe I adequately outlined in one of my essays, I did not do so well. I was not kicked out, but chose to withdraw after 3 semesters in hopes to someday return with a better attitude after joining the military. My GPA was around a 2.0.

Since then I have done great. For a year and a half I maintained a 4.0 at the defense language institute studying Arabic. I also did well at three other technical schools over the next year and a half studying foriegn intel and qualifying to fly on a military warplane. When deployed I was apointed lead operator and supervised my crew on and off the plane, and was the primary author of many intelligence reports. I have an awesome rec from one of my military instructors detailing this.

So, my transcripts will look like this:
HS: 3.7+ very hard coursload including ~30 credits college dual credit
College: 2.0+ (3 semesters ~30 credits) over 4 years ago
Military: 4.0 (DLI Arabic 45 credits) (top grad all throughout 3 years of
formal classroom training)

I have good ECs including comunity service and volunteering. I took the SAT for the first time and got a 1360 last December. My essays were well written and properly told my story.

Obviously, the weakest part of my app is my first attempt at college. But, I believe the strongest part were my reasons for wanting to attend Georgetown University. I wish to study my passion, Arabic, at the best Arabic program in the country. My love for the Arabic language shined through my app as well as my performance in the last 4 years.

Nspeds, can this trump my poor college record from almost 5 years ago?
m hoping that the fact that i am at an ivy will help that a little,
Hells yes. I cannot identify enough top 25 university/top 10 transfers who had lower than the CC-stellar GPA:)
Is it okay to send in a report to gtown even though they do not require one?
Absolutely, though not for the reason you would probably identify. Not only will it show them grade improvement, but it will show your interest in the school. I remember doing the same when I applied, I really think that that is what made my application salient: it gives the admissions committee another reason to look at your file. Believe me, in competitive college admissions, you will want to be in the corner of the admissions committee's minds as much as you can – in a good way; that is, you can also make your application salient by being obnoxious, but I trust you are beyond that.
That's good enough!

I don't think so. The committee has enough text to read as it is; there is a thin border between providing enough information and too much information. A mid-term report is a quick and painless read: look at the GPA, and this student is doing well. A letter takes time to be read, and is rarely compelling enough to tip a decision in the applicant's favor.

What are your stats and to which school in Georgetown are you applying?
Nspeds, can this trump my poor college record from almost 5 years ago?
Oooooh, your record is dicey, but I think your competitive edge comes not only from an astounding level of performance in later college level work, but also from your concentrating in Arabic. Our university values greatly the Arabic program, with extensive funding not only from the university, but also from the government. We are also one of the two creators of Arabic textbooks, so that should symbolize the program's academic prowess.

You might get in if you are applying to the College. The SFS is probably either a waitlist or a reject.

Good luck:)

Nspeds- I had a 1320 on the SAt's and a 32 on the ACT and sent both of these scores to the GU when I applied last year out of high school. This time, I only sent the ACT since they told me that would be sufficient over the SAt and subject tests...I'm hoping they will "forget" about my lower SAT scores that I sent last year though. And is some weight taken off standardized test scoring in general when you apply as a transfer? Esp with a fairly high gpa ? (3.933) Thanks for your input.

bump I'll respond tomorrow.

bump .. . . . .

Wow this is probably THE most useful transfer thread in this admissions season.

I did poorly in highschool and want to try and transfer to Georgetown

3.3GPA but there was a really strong positive trend in my grades, did poorly first two years then last two took harder classes and did much better

My reccomendation was excellent (I imagine) and my essays are good.
