I am considering both Georgetown and George Washington; just looking for comparisons, pros/cons of each, etc.

I feel GTwon has stronger academics. Gtown is near the Gtown area. Gtown has good foreign language programs (especially arabic and persian)

GWashington is a more student focus school, they really spoil their students (not to say the students themselves are spoiled), this might be due to the xtra tuition. GW has some nice accelerated brogram (6yr JD, 7yrMD)
This is minor but GW has a ,metro stop.

personally i would go to Gtown if accepted to both

Academically, Georgetown has a much better reputation and higher quality professors (Former Secretaries of State, National Security Advisors, Directors of the CIA, etc). Their basketball team is also better, and it is not as expensive as GW (which is the most expensive college in the US).

yeah, but remember GW locks in their tuition so what you pay freshman year is what you pay all 4 years.

don't underestimate how nice it is to be right on the Metro

if you're rejected from GTown, it's worth considering GW, because you're still in the right town to go great internships. the GW kids all come out with a bunch of internships under their belts.

GT does have a bus constantly running that takes you to the Metro. And, in all honesty, it is not that far of a walk between GT and GW. Good exercise on a nice day. Schoolwise, each has their own pros. Really depends on what you are looking for in a school and academics.

visited both 5 days ago. they have a completely different feel. personally, i like georgetown way better because it actually feels like a college campus. gw feels like ur in the city but just going to college. u dont really get a sense of community and school spirit that u do at georgetown. academically, georgetown is superior as well and harder to get into.

Georgetown and GW are so different, and there are so many factors to consider.

BUT as a Georgetown junior, I'd like to say that the metro thing is becoming more of a big deal. Being dependenton the GUTS kind of sucks. The Rosslyn guts runs only only a handful of times on Saturdays from noon to five (something like that- the website's down so I can't check) and doesn't run on Sundays. The Dupont GUTS runs a only a few times on Sundays. The GUTS to the metro add twenty or thirty minutes to any commute, especially considering wait times and traffic.

Just something to think about.

how easy is it to do homework, reading, etc. on the GUTS bus, if you're spending so much time on it? Laptops?

aihy, do most people take guts to the stations or just walk to them because when i was there it was only like a 10 min walk from the foggy bottom station to georgetown and i heard rosslyn is even closer. if it is 20-30 minute wait plus ride why not walk?

there is no way the walk from georgetown to the foggy bottom metro stop took 10 minutes. maybe if you sprinted it.

When the weather is beautiful, the walk to the Rosslyn metro is incredible and I love it. Great views of the city.

The rest of the time? It's not so nice...if it's sweltering hot, freezing cold, raining, snowing. The walk is kind of long also if you have a heavy bag or uncomfortable shoes...you get the idea. Much of the time, you don't have a choice but it's still not convenient to have to depend on the bus.

Tennisboy1005 might be talking about the distance between Foggy Bottom and the end of M ST? That's about a ten minute walk, but from Foggy Bottom to the Georgetown campus is at least 20 or 25 minutes, maybe a little longer.

o well im 6'5" so maybe i walk quicker and take longer steps than most. i timed it when we walked there and it was 12 minutes. how much closer t georgetown is rosslyn than foggy bottom?

I think they main difference in my opinion besides reputation (which may be a consideration for you or not. it wasn't a big factor in my decision) is whether or not you feel in comfortable in a city campus. Georgetown has an actual campus and felt like a stronger community as a result of athletics and a long standing sense of tradition. George Washington is more like NYU; it blends into the city, convenient and exciting but not for everyone. I also think that if you are interested in international anything, SFS is a simply a stronger program with more opportunities. That's debatable of course and I'm biased, but that is just my honest opinion.

I got into both, I chose Georgetown. You should do the same.

lol, no ones does hw on the GUTS buses, not worth it...

AU is the best =D

I have been admitted to Security Programs in GWU and GT, and am now facing the dilemma of chossing between them.
As to the reputation, people have different opnions towards them, but GW location is just a bit better than GT.

Academically, GT is said to be better than GW, but as to the program design that I have applied to, it seems that GW has a more diversity in Security studies, that it not only focus on traditional security but also non-traditional security issues, while GT focuses mainly on the military-related issues, any opnions??

PS: Does graduating from either GW or GT bare different advatages in applying for interns/job ?

Gary, are you referring to graduate or undergraduate programs? I'm in both at Georgetown (doing a 5-year BSFS/MA Security studies program), so I can help you either way, but I need to know which one.

Briefly, on the undergraduate side Security Studies is a subfield within two of the majors (International Politics and Science, Technonology, and International Affairs) in the School of Foreign Service. While there is a large number of traditional Milsec-style classes, there are also many that count toward the majors that are more culturally-focused/non-traditional/constructivist.

On the graduate side, the Security Studies Program is arguably the best in the country, and I can talk about that as well if you'd like.

tennisboy1005....6'5''!?! And I thought I was tall...

I'm sorry, but unless GW is giving you a lot of money, I can't fathom why anyone would prefer it over Georgetown.
Georgetown will provide a far superior education, college experience, and degree. The campuses are only about 15 minutes apart but almost as if in separate worlds in terms of location. Georgetown has an actual campus, whereas GW does not.
Here's something to consider: about 80% of the transfer applications to Georgetown are from GW students.
Although I mean no offense to GW-- I am sure that it is a fine school with many intelligent people-- I honestly think you will regret the choice every day if you go to GW over Georgetown.
