Strictly from a prestige standpoint, which school would be considered to have the most social prestige... Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Penn or Brown?

Penn
Georgetown
Brown
JHU

brown
penn
georgetown
jhu

How the heck do u put brown at the top? Above Penn? please

Brown
Georgetown
Penn
JHU

Many people think Penn is public, or Penn State, thus lowering it's actual name recognition. Brown and Georgetown both have very distinctive names, and thus are higher up on the name recognition ladder (Brown a little moreso because it's an Ivy League). JHU is not known for much more than sciences (even though it has great programs in many other things), so that brings it down some.

That's correct, calidan. Most people think Penn is a state-school. But, the people that actually know what Penn is are the only people that matter, I guess.

To clarify: Penn = UPenn

UPenn
Georgetown
Brown
JHU

JHU because everyone knows them for their med school and not for their social sciences. UPenn because it is an Ivy. Brown is one too, but it is the least competitive of the Ivies. Georgetown because of SFS, Bill Clinton, Maria Shriver, and Scalia.

UPenn=Georgetown=Brown
JHU

I really don't see any distinction among the 3 in terms of prestige.

I would argue that Brown is a better known Ivy than UPenn. UPenn's overall reputation is bolstered by Wharton, while none of the other schools is particularly distinguished. Brown is better all-around, and its reputation relies on the school as a whole rather than one individual school within the university.

true. Penn has Wharton and Georgetown has SFS. Brown only has.......rhode island.

Dude... Pawtucket is where it's at. ;)

oops, my bad.

j/k... but I actualy kinda liked Providence... :o

"Penn has Wharton and Georgetown has SFS. Brown only has.......rhode island."
"UPenn's overall reputation is bolstered by Wharton, while none of the other schools is particularly distinguished"

can't you the same about georgetown then? ie SFS?

sure. whatever floats your boat

Yes, except that Georgetown also has renowned language programs, a respected business school, and a very good nursing school. SFS is just the school it is best known for.

of course, it's not the size of the boat, but the motion in the ocean.

Just in case you were feeling down about your boat. (j/k)

Hahahaha... good times. :p

To answer the OP's question, you should not base your decision for atending a school on its level of prestige.

actually, that doesn't answer the OP's question at all. Read it again, bud.
