JHU vs. Georgetown vs. Penn vs. Brown

Strictly from a prestige standpoint, which school would have the most social prestige... JHU, Georgetown, Penn, or Brown?

im getting a vibe from brown...

I'm thinking Penn for prestige since it gets the most applicants (plus it's ivy league) but Hopkins is clearly the best. :)

its not even close. Hopkins offers you the most. The others basically cant compete

I applied to all three... Brown has more prestige that Georgetown, and Georgetown has more prestige than JHU for undergrad (U Penn would go before or after Brown... don't know). Although, for me, I would rather go to JHU than georgetown. From an international stand point, JHU has more prestige than any of the three schools.

That's very interesting to hear different perspectives, although I enjoy reading different views. I would assume without Wharton, Penn doesn't have a whole lot of international prestige, even though it's an Ivy, but I'm not sure.
As far as JHU and Georgetown, they both would be considered "internationally" prestigious for their medical and International Realtions programs. Brown is a very "progressive Ivy" due to it's unique curriculum.

Undoubtedly either Penn or Brown, becaues they're both part of the Ivy League. Georgetown and JHU, though impressive schools, simply do not have the name recognition, nor the distinction of being a member of the "Ancient Eight" as Penn and Brown. But hey, who really cares...

yeahh.. jhu is underrated..

why does it matter

what do you mean "social prestige"? you mean which will sound the most impressive to the cocktail party crowd? well, in that case probably brown because i think most people view Penn as the safety of the ivy league (which i think will soon be replaced by Cornell).

But then again, who cares what people at cocktail parties think. If everyone only listened to them, someone from some small liberal arts college would look more "prestigious" than someone who went to a technical school (i.e. MIT, JHU, CalTech...etc...). So if you care about "social prestige", go to brown, but if you care about getting a better education, go somewhere else.

Brown is full of hippies anyways.

Thank-you for that generalization about Brown. Yes, hippies with outstanding ECs, scores, and class standing.

haha dont get defensive. and besides, behind every generalization or stereotype there is at least some truth.

**btw, one of my best friends goes to brown and he completely agrees that it is overriden with "progressive" hippies. im not trying to insult a brown education, but i am saying that its not for everyone, and people have different perspectives on these things...so there is no one right answer.

seriously why should the issue of prestige hold any standing in your decision?

I agree with you.
Why prestige?

Does Hopkins offer what you want and does it offer it in a way that you prefer?
If so, pick Hopkins.

If not, pick something less prestigeous. lol

For medical and biomedical, JHU definitely. For politics and other similar fields, Georgetown. For business and economics, Penn's Wharton.

Overall, I think Penn has the most prestige, followed JHU.

LOL of course the JHU board would say this.

However, JHU (sadly and unfairly) would go at the bottom of this list.

Something like this:
-Brown/Penn
-Georgetown
-JHU

I would actually agree with calidan but before you guys all jump on my back, i didnt pick JHU on account of its prestige or lack there of...

oh well, if we applied to JHU and want to go to JHU, who cares which school is more prestige? thats the problem with most applicants, they apply to schools that are listed as top whatever on some stupid magazine USNEWS and they dont know anything about the school itself other than it's "good." so some idiot might apply to a well-known school for politics when they want to major in say...medicine....just because of the school's name. i chose jhu becuase it's one of the best in med, i dont give a crap about other schools and how well-known they are. it's not the school's name, it's how the school will suit you and you will suit the school. :/

word......

US:
Georgetown/Brown/Penn
JHU

International:
JHU
Georgetown/Brown/Penn

I think this is because (from talking to alumni) JHU has alot international on campus and it has lot of international connections, so it's name is really well known in every corner of the world, especially Asia, because of its fantastic medical school and biomed program.
