Georgetown vs. Macaulay Hunter

So I got into both schools, and I'm conflicted. I have yet to receive financial aid information for Georgetown, and that will likely make the decision for me. I am attending both Accepted Students days as well.

I kind of applied to both schools on a whim. I got wait listed at Wesleyan, which was probably my first choice, but I'm still happy to have both of these great options. I am undecided about my major, but will probably go into political science, but definitely something in the social sciences or liberal arts.

So Macaulay is a great program. It's free, has the cultural passport which provides free admission to top museums, plays and other cultural events in the city, free laptop, and $7500 opportunities grant. I have a bunch of friends that live in the city already as well. I loveeee the city, and it's really important to me to be there. I got into NYU as well, but it's financial aid package obviously was not doable, so Macaulay beat that out definitely. I also love the program of Macualay, putting students out in the city to get life experience and they become cultured and well rounded people. Also, Macaulay students get advanced class registration. My only qualms are a) name recognition, as in do grad schools know about this program, or do they just treat it like normal Hunter? And b) I'd be worried if most classes are normal Hunter classes, but are most Macaulay-only classes or Hunter Honors Classes?

And then there's Georgetown. I was deferred EA and never had an emotional connection here. I never visited, and I completely wrote it off because it's so hard to get into, so I was shocked when I actually did get in! It's obviously an amazing school, and has a great political science program. My only thing about it is that it's not in NYC, which was really important to me, and that it's probably going to cost a lot, compared to Macaulay's $0 price tag. That is pretty hard to beat.

My qualms about Macaulay and the financial aid package and overall atmosphere at Georgetown are all the things now that I plan to find out at Accepted Students Day which will ultimately help me make my decision. But for now does anyone have any input? Thanks for your help!

I don’t know how you want me to answer this without insulting CUNY.

I totally understand that. But I do love the macaulay program and there are a lot of perks, but I know how great Georgetown is too. This is why it will be such a hard decision. I posted it on this board because I’m curious how many people are familiar with the Macaulay program as well.

If it’s going to cost 60k a year, THEN I’d go to Hunter. Have you done price calculators?

I just got my Georgetown financial aid info in the mail and, with $3000 loans and $3000 work studied, it would cost me $25,000 to go to Georgetown. But my sister is currently in college so i’m not sure how this award will change next year

If you’re sister will also be in college in the Fall '13, when you start, then your FINAID should have taken that into consideration, if you filled out your FASA to reflect that. And if you’re sister will also be in college in Fall '14, you can expect your FINAID to be consistent with what you have been awarded.

Well yeah, I know that, but what I mean is I’m not sure how the fin aid package I got will stack up beyond 2014. My sister will be in school for only one more year, and after that I’m just curious what my fin aid will be like because she will no longer be in college.

There are Finaid calculators online to help estimate your EFC once you’re sister graduates.

I think collegeboard has a Finaid calculator for public and private schools.
