Question About Macaualay

Now I face the difficult choice of Macaulay at Hunter or Georgetown. Obviously Georgetown has better name recognition, and I'm currently undecided but I'm leaning towards political science, so obviously Georgetown has an amazing program. At this time, I haven't heard from financial aid at Georgetown, but obviously Macaulay will have it beat, it is just a question of by how much.

I have always loved Macaulay, but my one qualm about it is the classes. What percentage of your classes are Macaulay only, what percentage are honors, and what percentage are normal Hunter classes? I want to be intellectually stimulated and challenged, and I don't just want to sit through a normal Hunter class, whereas I know Georgetown would offer amazing professors and classes.

Congrats on getting accepted to both Macaulay at Hunter and Georgetown! S has also been accepted to Macaulay at Hunter, and a little while back, I asked a similar question about the classes. On the Macaulay thread, Dramamine (a current freshman) is wonderful about answering questions. This was the response I got about the courses:

“Yeah, about half of my classes are with Macaulay students, but that number is different for everyone – I have friends who have taken exclusively honors classes for both semesters this year. And to be honest, the ones with fellow honors kids are definitely DEFINITELY better than the regular Hunter classes. Hunter students tend to be a little cold and unfriendly the majority of the time, though my non-honors Intensive Latin course this semester is filled with really nice and friendly and interesting people. From what I’ve gathered from my friends and upperclassmen, however, this is pretty rare, and your son will more likely find the honors classes more friendly and engaging and higher-quality than the non-honors ones.”

Thank you! It’ll definitely be a hard decision, but really the financial aid package from Georgetown will be a huge factor.

So does this mean that about half are Macaulay-only and half are Hunter Honors classes? Are any of them normal Hunter classes then? I have a friend who is a freshman at Macaulay Hunter and another friend who is just at normal Hunter, and I know they have taken a class together, so I’m unsure if this is an honors class or a normal class. This is a huge factor in my decision, so I’d like to know for sure. I guess if it’s unclear I’ll be able to ask during Accepted Students day, which is only a couple of weeks away. Thank you for your help!

I know - it’s a little confusing. I’m hoping we learn more on accepted students day as well. From what I can gather, there are VERY few Macaulay-only classes. I think that the Macaulay students just have the option of registering for the home institution’s regular classes or honors classes, so the distribution of them can vary by student. What I’m having a difficult time figuring out is how many of Hunter’s classes are available at the honors level. Of course, DH says that given the GPA required to stay in Macaulay, maybe it would be good for S to take some of the (presumably) easier regular-level classes! LOL

Yes, I agree haha, I definitely would not want to fail out…but I want to know that I’m going to a place where I am intellectually stimulated and have access to wonderful professors. I’m hoping that most Macaulay classes are Macaulay-only or Honors Classes with very few, if any, normal Hunter classes. I’m leaning towards Macaulay over Georgetown right now, but we’ll have to see how everything turns out!

I have the same fears, OP. I was also admitted to Macaulay Hunter. Hope to see you at accepted students day!
