Georgetown vs NYU

I'm having a lot of trouble deciding between Georgetown College and NYU-Stern Business School. I intend on majoring in Economics. With that in mind, NYC definitely has the ideal environment for the major. However, my parents prefer Georgetown because of the higher ranking of the school, its prestige, its student body and its proximity to home.

Which school offers a better undergraduate Economics program? A better campus life experience? Offer better network opportunity?

I think that NYU-Stern Business School is the best u can get in the US for economic studies. If you had been accepted to G-Town business school, it would preferable 4 u, but since it's G-Town college, I guess that Stern will best suit u if you intend to major in economics. And plus, u'll have without any doubt many connections in NYU +job opportunites...

Stern might have slightly better access to jobs because of New York, but a good student at Georgetown will do very well. Socially I think there is no comparison, Georgetown is an excellent college experience while Stern is intense and lacks a strong community. NYU can be a lonely place. I would go to Georgetown without a second thought.

I have visited both campuses this week. NYC is definitely a lot to take in. The atmosphere is indeed overbearing and quite depressing on a day when the weather is bad. Also, I feel as if everything in NYC is impersonal. As for Georgetown, I love the campus and the friendly students who are there.

My main dilemma is choosing GTown College where there is a better campus community experience and provides more comfortable surroundings vs. Stern at a more intimidating environment that offers more opportunitites for my major.

I am really torn right now!!! Would it be completely unwise of me to pass on the #2 best undergraduate business school (according to U.S. News) for Georgetown (I mean, I'm sure i have the option to switch into McDonough School of Business)?

i've discovered this in my college research: rankings are based on the college as a whole, and certain weaker schools within the college can seriously bring a ranking down....for int'l business stern (not necessarily NYU as a whole )is def. one of the best, compared to georgetown, which is better overall. so if you're sure in your major, go with nyu

Thank you for all of your inputs on this topic. Another factor that I am considering is the recruiting after graduation. If I choose to go to Georgetown, would I have more trouble securing a job in the economics field?

that is exactly why you should go to Stern. Georgetown would be better for IR or Government, but not Business. The business program at GU is one of its weakest, next to maybe Pre-Med or Nursing. While it is a possibility to switch into McDonough, I think Stern is a Can't-Miss for a MBA type of person like yourself.

The campus situation is not as daunting as others make it seem. NYU Stern is a smaller community within a larger NYU community and the opportunities it affords you are boundless.

Socially, the two schools are different, but overall, the end result is the same: you will have a good time at both. GU has more of a campus, but NYU's smaller Stern community should make up for that. The close ties you will make there will create that "Sense of Community" NYU seems to lack.

Basically, for what you want to do, NYU Stern is probably the best option in the country for you (except for maybe Wharton). Go there and you'll no doubt love it--especially when you get recruited by Goldman Sachs in 4 years.
