Georgetown WStudy subject to taxes?

I am a transfer student and because I was never charged a tax on my earnings at my previous institution, I was surprised to see that Georgetown has taken nearly $11 from my biweekly $230 (Fed. and DC tax). Being a dependent and having $2000 WS spread over two years, will i have to file tax returns? Is there any reason why I was not charged at my previous institution in GA?

Did you file for tax exemption? Work study jobs aren’t subject to taxes but you have to file for it.

on the W4 form there was a section for exemption but under the following criteria:
● Last year I had a right to a refund of all federal income tax withheld because I had no tax liability and
● This year I expect a refund of all federal income tax withheld because I expect to have no tax liability.

I have never submitted taxes before so I naturally would not receive any refund. Should I have put exempt regardless?

PS. I just did some research and I think I should have submitted exempt so that is what I will do.

I’m not required to pay DC or Federal taxes and I’m on work study.

I just submitted a renewed W4 form where I claimed “Exempt” so hopefully they wont charge me anything more.
