My daughter has been accepted EA to Georgetown but has not yet committed. We are going to visit Georgetown for accepted students day and I want to show her the best parts of Georgetown. I'm not familiar with the surrounding area. Where should we focus our limited visiting time: M Street or Wisconsin Avenue? Which is more "collegey"?

Ok here goes:

The Tombs (def want to visit)
The MSB building/Leavey Center
Wisey’s (right by Tombs)

Campus is relatively small, so you can see everything in a couple hours (including going into the buildings and etc)…

I would avoid M Street/Wisconsin for a collegey feel… for dinner, I would try somewhere nice like Filomena’s or 1789 (pricey, but I think it’s worth it), but I think Filomena’s win (more casual, but GREAT food)… but the tour should cover everything…

M Street/Wisconsin Ave. are not part of the campus, but they are part of the Hoya life (even if they cannot always afford to eat, drink, or shop in the area). Its a regular extension of school life. My S often visited the Apple store on Wisconsin to browse or get his computer fixed and he also liked to hang out at the Barnes & Noble on M St. When his girlfriend was having a bad day, a quick trip to Georgetown Cupcakes often saved the day.

Georgetown Cupcakes is a must, although some people prefer Bake & Wired. Try both.

The Georgetown area is a very cool part of DC and you should visit it, but as noted above it doesn’t have a college feel. But I guess that is part of what Georgetown is about. I would suggest going down to M Street and also up Wisconsin. If you need a break and happen to go that far north (about 1/2 mile from Wisconsin and M) the Safeway has a place to park, get refreshments and a big cafe/sunroom.

Wisconsin is more shopping-heavy, percentage wise, while M Street is more restaurant-heavy, although each has plenty of the other (e.g. Wisconsin has the historic Martin’s Tavern, M has the Georgetown mall).

The Georgetown waterfront is also pretty, though like most things, it’s much more enjoyable during warm weather. Crossing the Key Bridge by foot can be incredibly scenic (though, again, much more fun when there’s not a massive wind chill).

Also potentially worth keeping in mind that M Street is relatively flat, while Wisconsin Avenue is at an include (south is downhill).

^Georgetown Mall isn’t all that great; it’s usually quite empty. Wisconsin has a better offering, shopping-wise.
