Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8, pretty unique
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1 (rating 1-10, details): AP Calc teacher – FERPA
She loves me. She said she likes to treat me as a “personal calculator” and nominated me for math award because my grade was the highest in school’s history but didn’t get it
Teacher Rec #2 (rating 1-10, details): History teacher – FERPA
I was really engaged in his class and got history award for the class
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details): FERPA
I was those few people who talk to their counselor very often so she knows me very well
Additional Rec (if any) (rating 1-10, details): TSA advisor, talked about how I self-taught technical sketching using a textbook he gave me and won state champion
Interview (if any) (rating 1-10, details): none
Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: nope
Intended Major: Electrical Engineering
State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant): Thailand
School Type: 9-10 public 11-12 private
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: High enough to not qualify for aid + I’m international
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
Lots of Thai students come to the States these days because of the availability of scholarships so most of them just study their entire lives to get these scholarships but aren’t really interested in anything. I think I am just different than other Thai kids.
Reflections:
Strengths:
SAT II math and physics, some STEM awards, devotion to STEM clubs, research internship (maybe),
Weaknesses:
Asian Male International (It’s like everything is against me…), I only took 2 AP exams and 3 for senior year (much less than GA Tech average), I am not well-rounded (sports and I are not compatible and I am not into volunteer work. I did, however, went to help children with autism with my robotics research), SAT (for an Asian at least)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
I feel like the exchange program, and cultural exchange programs I went to over the years really hinder my ability to take high level courses as credits weren’t easily transferred. I also underestimated my ability in Humanities courses. But I think they recognized this and thought my experiences living in several countries and cultures might be a good addition to their school.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Case Western Deferred: MIT, Umich Rejected: Caltech
General Comments (if any): I try to use different essays to illuminate different parts of my life. Some parts of my application make up for other not so spectacular parts and forms a complete picture of my life.
