Georgia Tech dual enrollment chances + course selection?

Hi everyone
I’m a junior in North Fulton and I’m looking at full-time dual enrollment next year (Move On When Ready). I want to major in biology but I took AP Bio last year and I’m self-studying AP Environmental Science so my options are really limited; if I don’t do DE next year I’ll just end up taking a bunch of classes that don’t really interest me.
According to my counselor, getting into the program is about as difficult as getting into Georgia Tech, except I’m obviously not expected to have as many AP’s as a graduating senior. They also don’t consider subjective things like extracurriculars.

SAT: 1550 (800V/750M), one sitting, will retake
GPA: 4.1 Hope, 3.94 UW, 4.35 W
AP: AP Human Geo (5), AP Bio (5), AP World (5), AP Physics 1, AP US History, AP Calculus AB, AP Lang, APES

Should I retake the SAT? Also, what classes should I take? To graduate, I only need one English credit (and Gov and Econ, which I’m taking online), so I’m pretty free in terms of what classes I take.

?

Take more math. Georgia tech likes math. Take chemistry. If you do dual enrollment take the next bio course. And definitely take college english. But do not take econ fall semester if you plan to dual enroll. It has to bring spring semester or you could force an early graduation.

Taking the sat again is a waste of time and energy.

Either load up on five aps next year or dual enroll. I would highly recommend you take ap physics and college calculus. If you fail to take math next year you diminish your chances as gt cal is taught in north fulton and you did not take the highest math available.

@scubadive My school’s chemistry teachers are all notoriously bad, but if I do dual enrollment I will definitely take chemistry. I will apply for Georgia Tech dual enrollment (same process for on campus vs. distance math) and if I’m accepted I’ll do on-campus DE, and if not I’ll take calc C over the summer (online; I don’t “mesh well” with my school’s calc teacher) and then AP Stat in the fall.
If I don’t do DE next year I’ll take: AP French, AP Lit (more rigorous than College English according to my counselor), AP Physics 2, AP Stat, AP CompSci, and either AP Physics C or Advanced Drama (not loving the idea of 6 AP’s).

GT dual enrollment is not the only game in town. You can apply for dual enrollment at more than one school. If you dont get into GT’s program take it at Georgia State would be my advice. From my understanding GT calc only takes BC calc students now unlike a few years ago. Ap Lit will not give you any additional credit and you will be stuck taking english at gt once you get there. While ap lit is harder college english transfers. why physics 2 and c that is kind of a duplication. Physics 2 will get you general credits. AP Stats while useful does not transfer. If you take bc calc over the summer you are still better off if you do not get accepted to gt for dual enrollment taking math at a college level to transfer. Are you taking econ this year or next?

However since you are a bio major if you stay at hs for all your senior courses i would take a science class that relates to your major whether it is anatomy or biochem depending on your schools offferings. I would not duplicate two physics courses. Getting rid of english by taking college english frees up six credit hours. Lab classes require matlab so getting rid of the cs requirement is not necessarily a good thing. You need to look up the course requirements for your major and what ap’s or dual enrollment classes transfer. That would be my advice.

Until a year or so ago, one of GT’s explicit requirements for DE was that you have exhausted your high school’s offerings for the subjects you want to study at Tech, with an exception here and there if you just need to pick up a credit such as English) to graduate. Apparently that is no longer an explicit requirement, but I would still expect it to be one of the things they strongly consider. Accordingly, I would try to show more than “my high school’s course offerings don’t interest me” to get admitted. Also, keep in mind that being admitted for DE is no guarantee of freshman admission, and you have to apply all over again if you want to matriculate at Tech. Of course, if you do poorly in your DE classes, it might actually hurt your freshman admission chances.

@scubadive

  1. I will apply to multiple DE programs.
  2. My counselor has strongly advised me to take AP Lit and I like the teacher a lot. I don’t mind taking more English in college, I’d rather have a well-taught class that I enjoy.
  3. If I don’t get accepted to GT DE, I plan on taking Physics 1 (this year) and 2 to get a strong grasp on the concepts that will be taught in college physics, and Physics C to get credit for an introductory calculus-based physics class like those taught at Tech - also, like AP Lit, I really like my physics teacher and trust his recommendation. They are not duplicate classes.
  4. I will take AP Stat because my counselor has told me that I need to take a math class my senior year. I will already have completed through Calc BC but will not have taken the BC exam so I wouldn’t be eligible for GT math - anyway, if I did get accepted to GT distance math, I’d also be eligible to take classes on campus so the problem would be solved.
  5. Like I said, I have already taken AP Bio and will take the APES exam. The only other bio-related class my school offers is on-level anatomy, which is painfully easy. I have learned as much from my mom’s old anatomy coloring book (from OT school) as people learn in that class.
I have looked at my major requirements and am planning my schedule accordingly.
@planit - I have exhausted my high school’s advanced biology offerings, with the exception of on-level anatomy. I plan on presenting myself as I am - as a young student with a thirst for knowledge that cannot be satisfied at my school. If accepted, I will pour myself into my studies to ensure that I am a good candidate for not only GT but any other school.
    Thanks all!

Once you take econ and political science the state will force you to graduate in december unless you take a year long high school english course. Once you fulfill all state requirements to graduate you graduate and you need to be mindful of this. Not sure if you are currently taking political science and econ online. If so you have to take english at high school senior year. However, dual enrolling at gt potentially as a senior from n fulton presents issues with scheduling classes at gt and your AP lit class.

@scubadive I have never heard anything about this. I will discuss with my counselor; if she affirms this, I will delay taking English until the spring semester or take a yearlong course. A note to clarify - if I am accepted to DE at Tech I won’t take any classes on my school’s campus due to travel time and other scheduling complications.
