I think you have a solid chance. Out of state might make it a bit harder for you. For EA, last year, in state students were accepted at a rate of 45% while out of state students were at a rate of 28%. You can see the difference. What is your intended major?

I don’t do chance threads but want to make sure you are aware that GT gives lousy financial aid to OOS, basically all loans. There are a few good merit scholarships like provost or stamps, but all the whole financial aid at GT for OOS is not very good. Still apply but with the understanding that unless you get one of the big scholarships, GT will probably be affordable for you. Apply to the big private scholarships like the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship.

As an aside, don’t forget to look at Questbridge. With you income level you would be eligible to apply to that scholarship. Also this past year the UC’s were really terrible for financial aid for my low-income students; they required my students to take between $8K to $11K out in loans with an EFC of zero. Focus on private schools that give good financial aid. If your major is the sciences, Pitzer College has given my students great aid.

Good luck.

@indy101 As of right now, I am looking at either pre-med major or engineering major (lower chance because competition in engineering major is even more fierce).

@itsv I forgot to mention that while my parents’ yearly income is low, they have a significant amount of assets that deprive us from acquiring a hearty financial aid package from most private schools. That’s why our family is gearing my college search more towards public schools. And also thank you for your advices/suggestions in your last paragraph! I’ll definitely look into Pitzer College as I plan to major either premed or engineering…
