I'm really confused. Everyone is getting accpetance letters from GT. The only thing I got was a letter saying I wasn't a PS semifinalist. Not to be arrogant (and I know this comes across as very arrogant), but I just got accepted EA into MIT. How can I be in the top 383 math and science students in the country and not be in the top 9% of applicants at GT, which does not have nearly the prestige that MIT has? I have excellent test scores (1560, 800 x 3, 35 ACT), grades (all A's), ECs, essay, etc. I don't actually care that GT doesn't like me; I plan on attending MIT anyway. But I'm still curious...

I don't think you would be a semifinalist unless you were accepted. Are you sure you didn't miss a letter?

kodiak, shut uppppppppppppppppppppp. just because you have the high sat scores dont mean squat. maybe you are a robot, and dont have a personality

Oh, but I do have personality...I am female, interested in engineering...I have competed in many engineering/math/sciences competitions...community service, leadership, atheltics, etc. MIT does not admit robots...they reject more 1600s than probably any other university...I know very well that high scores mean next to nothing...obviously you didn't read the rest of my post.

pokey318-

That's just it. I'm not a semifinalist and the letter I received that says that also states that I will have to wait till March for my admissions decision.

Sorry, I misread; I thought you wrote your were a semifinalist. I am not familar with how GT handles their admissions. Best of luck to you.

kodiak86, I think you just have to remember that each school is different in who they are looking for and every admissions plan has its flaws.

In any prestigious school there is always competition in every area of the applicant spectrum and so there isn't always enough room to admit every Type A student. On the same hand, I don't think an admittance makes you a better person. Sure, I was deferred for MIT EA but I don't think that makes me less of a student than you or anyone else (not that I might be, just that not being accepted doesn't change that to any large extent).

How can I be in the top 383 math and science students in the country and not be in the top 9% of applicants at GT, which does not have nearly the prestige that MIT has?

C'mon, maybe that's why Georgia Tech didn't make you a PSP semi-finalist...

I was accepted EA at MIT and didn't get Pres Scholar from GA Tech (Accepted but not going, MIT '09 :) )

I'm actually rather shocked that some MIT acceptees didn't get in. I'm nearly positive that I would have been deferred EA from MIT, mainly because I don't stand out among others (I didn't apply because MIT doesn't really suit me...Rose-Hulman all the way!!). Yet somehow I got Semifinalist for PSP. I think that thiticalcrinkin has the right idea, though...Georgia Tech and MIT have slightly different rating schemes, be they what they may.

It's not that they didn't get in. It's that they didn't get the President's Scholarship...

I understand the issue, and, anyways, it would apply just the same.

hmm. I don't know. I am a PS semifinalist and have shameful stats compared to you guys'.

I got in early December. I was a semifinalist as well- did the interview this week.
1410, 4/400, 5.00 weighted

i got in with such horrible scores; 500verbal and 750math.
however i didnt make a semi-final.

congrats to all acceptees!
oh. just wondering who's using GaTech for safety or finaid-stuffs??
in other words, is Gatech your first choice, or second, or third??
for me, it's one of my first choices.

rawepower, how was your interview? I'm having mine this week.

It went well. It was pretty short and it was with 3 alumni. They asked me a few questions about my resume and ambitions and then we pretty much had a conversation. However, I will say I'm glad that the Finalist status isn't based all on the interview.

3 alumni??! what else are they basing finalists on if it isn't all interview? (I'm glad to hear that, don't get me wrong.)

It's also based on your teacher recommendation forms you have to send in and your secondary school report.

I had my interview last night (with 2 alumni.) It was pretty casual; they asked the standard questions, etc. It went pretty well, although at the same time I'm not a big fan of the very general questions that get asked at interviews. It's certainly nothing to worry about or lose sleep over, though. Just be sure to open up and talk.

that's true. I had mine tonight. It was also with 2 alumni. They asked two questions that I had trouble answering- and a lot of offbeat ones. I just sort of evaded it with different answers. Bad idea. Otherwise I thougt I did pretty well. All the general questions weren't asked. I was disapointed. when do we hear back? (I'm too lazy to look at my book)
