Georgia Tech vs. U of Michigan for math/cs--Buyer's remorse

Pros and cons of each please? I picked U of Michigan, but having buyer’s remorse. I really liked Georgia Tech too. Wondering what others think?

Both are super schools! I think you’ll have a more well rounded experience at Michigan and Ann Arbor is fantastic.

You made your choice. Don’t look back!

Michigan and Georgia Tech were two of the 4 schools I was deciding between - ended up choosing Rice but I definitely put a lot of thought between Michigan and Georgia Tech, especially since I got into both early action and thought I might end up choosing between them. Here’s what I think:

Michigan gives you more of the traditional college experience. Big sports culture, parties, stuff like that. Definitely the more “fun” school compared to a more heavily STEM Georgia Tech. Michigan is also a much more well-rounded school: if you want to transfer to a non-STEM field then Mich is miles ahead of Georgia Tech. Ann Arbor is a very nice college town.

Georgia Tech is amazing for STEM. Atlanta’s a great city, there’s actually stuff to do off campus. Georgia Tech’s a smaller school (half the kids), so if you don’t like huge schools then Georgia Tech is better. Nicer weather.

Overall, they’re both great schools and you can’t go wrong with each one. I felt the same way (wondering if I was being stupid turning down Georgia Tech for CS), but at the end of the day both choices are equally valid and we shouldn’t waste time thinking about what ifs.

Thanks. I really liked the idea of milder weather (I’m from Chicago). Atlanta seemed like a nice city, and I liked that GT seemed manageable in size. I ended up picking Michigan because I thought the fact that it was well-rounded and I knew people there should carry the day. But Im driving myself crazy. I keep thinking I should call GT and beg for my spot back! lol

Take a deep breath.

Take another one.

Buyers remorse is VERY common, I frequently suffer from it myself.

Think for a moment - what will be the chances that, if you actually manage to get your spot back at GTech, that you would would once again have buyers remorse? I think that it would be pretty high.

GTech may be smaller than UMichigan, but with 16,000 undergraduates, it’s not a small university. It won’t really make a difference for you, not at those numbers.

UMichigan indeed has a much wider selection of majors and courses, while the two schools are equivalent for math and CS (though UMich has an edge with math).

There was no wrong choice, meaning that your choice was the right one. You will do great at UMichigan, and will be happy that you decided to attend it.

Congratulations, and enjoy!

Thank you! It was really a hard choice. I was also able to visit Michigan, but not GT. I’ve been watching YouTube videos of both, and GT looks fun and like an interesting place. The tech scene is very appealing. But I like Michigan a lot and will know people there.
