Get Acquainted Day

Hi. Would anyone like to compare notes about Get Acquainted Day?

My D and I thought it was great. On the day before GAD, my D lamented that she just can't figure out what Gettysburg is. (This came after spending Friday afternoon at Lincoln Scholar events.) She had chosen Gettysburg for very practical, logical reasons and never really felt emotionally connected to it.

When I asked her what she meant, she explained, "Well, Skidsmore is artsy granola. William & Mary is brainy prestige. Dickinson is green international. Muhlenberg is arts, pre-pro, and religiously diverse. I just can't figure out what Gettysburg is."

Her observation was particularly distressing to me because she had already confessed that she found Lincoln Day underwhelming. ("If I hear about the Eisenhower Institute one time I'm going to scream!") Plus, we had already deposited and she would be there in August. Buyers remorse was setting in.

All fears were quickly erased after the GAD convocation. While she considered the administrative speakers quite dull, the student speakers were awesome in her mind. I thought so, too. The expo was great and she signed up for 4 clubs. (The drumline and clapping tour guides were a nice touch, too.)

The rest of the day went just as well with lunch, tour, info sessions, etc. She had a great conversation with a prof in her prospective (Health Sciences) major, got suggestions for first year seminar, and learned she might be interested in a Math minor.

On the way home I asked if she had figured out what Gettysburg is. She said, "Yes. It's a school where you can do anything. Gettysburg is opportunity."

She wore her new sweatshirt (the kind with the huge "G" on the back) for the rest of the weekend. :)

My son and I attended this event too. We were very impressed with the school and sent the deposit today. We talked to numerous students who weren’t cheer leaders selected to sell the school, and all were very happy with their time spent at Gettysburg.

Overall, it is a very friendly campus with smart, attractive kids.
