It should be a seamless transition. Here is Federal Student Aid’s tip sheet: http://ifap.ed.gov/eannouncements/attachments/050415FSAIDReplaceHowToCreateFSAIDGuideATTACH.pdf . This is included in one of the links in the above article, but I posted it here to make it easy to find.

@kelsmom, Why do we have to enter our social security number on the internet? I don’t like that at all.

@austinmshauri You had to do so to apply for the original FAFSA PIN in the first place…

Did I? I must’ve closed my eyes and just typed. Lol. Thanks, @kgos16.

Will my kids get some kind of notice about this?

I’m guessing I need to deal with my PIN as well!

If you go to log-in on May 10, you should get promted to link your PIN with your new FSA username and password that you will create.

the only one who will, have a reason to log in will be the kid who needs to do a Direct Loan.

The federal sites are very secure. There is a lot of SSN-entering going on for those sites.

The change affects both current and former students. In order to get into the student loan sites (NSLDS; studentloans.gov), the use will need to update from PIN to the new system. Again, I don’t think it will be difficult or confusing. When someone on CC goes through it, please let us know what you thought!

It was actually fairly painless for a gov’t site, @kelsmom.

STUDENTS can go to the [FAFSA website](https://fafsa.ed.gov/index.htm) and click on log in. Students choose Enter Student Information. First, the student enters his/her name, social security #, and DOB. Next, they create their FSA ID. They have to enter their email, create a username and password. They enter their name, social security #, and DOB again, then enter the 4-digit pin from their old ID (so this ID can be linked to the old one, I guess). There are 4 challenge questions (they can choose from their questions for the 1st two, but the last two they have to make up on their own). After they agree to the terms they have to enter the 6-digit code sent to their email to verify the account.

PARENTS go to the [FAFSA website](https://fafsa.ed.gov/index.htm) and select create FSA ID or go to the [Federal Student Aid](https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm) website. First, they create their FSA ID. They have to enter their email, create a username and password. They also have to enter their name, social security #, and DOB, then enter the 4-digit pin from their old ID. There are 4 challenge questions (they can choose from their questions for the 1st two, but the last two they have to make up on their own). After they agree to the terms they have to enter the 6-digit code sent to their email to verify the account.

It really only takes a few minutes. Everyone should have a pen and notebook to write their account information in so they don’t lose it.

I’m getting about 10 emails a day saying my ID has been locked. Has anyone else experienced this? “Unlocking” it only sends more emails.
