This is the new ID system that will replace the old federal PIN for signing the FAFSA in 2016. You can set yours up now at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out/fsaid
You’ll need your old PIN, I believe, it asks for it.

No, you won’t need your old PIN … they asked for it for awhile during the transition phase, but now they no longer request it.
Make sure to write down your password and challenge question answers … if you forget the answers to your challenge questions, you will wish you hadn’t … it’s not easy to reset your FSA ID.
A couple other pointers:
Here is the link: https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm . You may want to read the FAQ before creating your ID: https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/pub/faq.htm .
It asked me for my old PIN today, to link them.
ETA, this is why it asked me, I guess mine was verified.
This is so weird, because I had to amend my info to students when they no longer were asked for their PINs … or so they told me. I couldn’t check it myself, because I had already set up a new FSA ID as soon as that started, so I could figure out the process. Thanks!
It sounds like without the pin, you just have to wait longer to use it. For people getting it now, it probably doesn’t matter.
I just did it…and it really was easy. I also got to a point where I put in my PIN number.
I really would suggest writing down all the challenge questions, and answers and keeping them in the same safe place where you used to keep your PIN.
Thank you, I received an email the other day reminding me and D to set up FSA IDs. For last year’s FAFSA we signed with PINs. I will have to sit down with D next week when she comes home for TG break and take care of this.
