getting a car

so my dad refused to buy me a used car! and I dont' want to drive a new car! (weird I know.) but I just don't see the point of a high school junior who just got her license driving a brand new car!! my dad said that it'll cost even more if the used car has problems and it breaks easily(haha)....but I mean i'm not getting a 10 year old car....i'm looking for a used car that's under 5 years old...and in a not-bad condition...but my dad told me there's no way that he's gonna get me a used car...it's p-i-s-s-ing me off!!!!!!!! and i'm the one that's gonna pay for the car, not him!!!!! URGGGGGGGGGGG

I can see his point but I can also see yours. If I had gotten a brand new car as my first-car I would be scared to drive it because if I wrecked it or someone hit the doors etc. But what the hell, the main reason I got myself a used one is because of money (I had to pay it all myself). If your dad is the one shelling out the cash, of course get a new car.

nope i'm the one that's gonna pay for the car.....but my dad said he would pay the downpayment for me...but still....i dont' want a new car...i just need a car that i can take myself wherever.

ps. oh and he also said that i HAVE TO get a 4wd car.....!!! but they cost like over $20,000....i mean if it really snows that bad...school would be canceled and everything then why need a freaking 4wd car....!

How does your dad get to control what sort of car you get if you're the one paying for it? It's your money -- why won't he let you do what you like with it? (If not legally, at least in principle.)

idk, mebbe cuz he's asian?
just a guess.

yeah my dad only buys new cars. never used or leased.

to paro46-----yep asian....

my parents only buy new as well. But that's for themself. I'm not even getting a car no matter what. If I had the money to pay for one myself, my parents wouldn't even allow me to buy one. They would sit me down for a 2 hour long lecture on how cars are not an investment and instead I should put the money into something more valuable. Hell, they would rather me spend my money in a few hours down in atlantic city than on a car.

You should probably sit him down and explain the situation to him. and then at the end if it seems like he wasn't paying attention to you, just tell him that if he wants you to get a new car, he has to pay for it. If you're paying for it, you get to choose what you want. Plain and simply.

hmm... I doubt many other people have had this issue.
I was so happy to get a new car instead of the used one I was expecting.
it won't be new for long!

Usually what's happened in my family is my brothers save up for cars and want to buy them used (cheaper), but my parents are always like "NO! NO! USED CARS ARE A DEATHTRAP" so they offer to buy them a new Lexus or something.

But of course my parents wouldn't have bought them a car if they hadn't tried to buy a used car themselves.

Granted, they were like 21 when they got their license.

i would graciously accept an engine in a box with wheels & steering & possibly a pole to use for braking. (possibly)

thanks mom & dad!!

Uh, I don't think that should matter. The car is what should matter.

My bf has a car that he bought new 4 years ago, mine is 10 years old this year and they are worth the same amount! And mine runs like a gem. I almost got a new car but I love the car I have more than the cars I almost got (mazda 3/6 or mustang conv). So I'd say let the car be the deciding factor. And always check the VIN if you do buy used!

I've had my car almost 3 years and no problems knock on wood just routine stuff like oil changes, new tires, and the like.

Maybe you can try leveling with him. You can maybe gather money required for a used car, and then your dad can make up the difference. You get to be without paying the extra dough. But in all truth and honestly, you know he only wants you to be safe.

At least you're not in my situation:
Me: Can I get a car?
Dad: No. I'm not buying you one.
Me: Ok can I get a car if I buy one with my own money?
Dad: No. Plus you dont even have any money.
Me: Ok then can I get a job?
Dad: No you have to study.
Me: Oh :</p>

Well, is your dad paying for the insurance??

Car insurance will be less when you are driving a new car vs. an old car, and it depends on what type of car you drive too.

^^^Thats not true - I'm paying under 300 per 6 months for insurance on my 88 corolla. If I had a new car, I'd be paying something like 2000.

Old cars are not necessarily a moneypit (maybe a deathtrap, but not a moneypit :D) I've put all of about 5 dollars into my corolla (starter fluid and brake fluid) in about 2 years other than oil/gas/wipers/insurance.

Used cars are cheaper to insure because the value is less. If you total it it's not much of a loss on the insurance companies end.

If you are worried about insurance at all... do avoid the sports cars. I have one and it's not exactly the cheapest to insure, it's like 100$ and something a month.

oh, ok.

I only assumed.

My badddd.

Just get a prius and make him pay a 100% down payment. lol

They're good on gas and they're made by Toyota so you know they're going to last forever. It's not 4wd though...oh well. I heard subaru has really good quality and they're pretty small so they're easy to maneuver. Oh and it's going to be used the minute you open the door and sit down. $2k depreciation once you step foot in the car...ouch.

Yeah try to convince him that you should get a used car...I wouldn't take that hit on depreciation. And since you JUST got your license getting a new car is a REALLY bad idea.

Here's an idea, tell him you're going to get a used car (stick to toyota, honda, vw, and smaller cars, VW jetta and honda civic tends to be very popular with teenagers) and tell him to give YOU the difference so you can spend it for college or something useful, not depreciation on a car that'll be used the minute you step foot in it.
