I just decided that I'll be taking summer school here in Cal after the school year.
Where is a good place to apply for a job over the summer? I prefer being inside campus
so it's nearby..when is Cal Dining hiring? I was also thinking about being applying to be a
cash register or something in the Cal Student store..other good choices? Thanks!

I thought most of those cashier jobs fall into the work study program. But I may be wrong. If it is unless you qualify for work study those jobs may be hard to get.

Look on Callisto and the Work Study job search website; many only or at least prefer to hire work-study students because then their wages are lower (but it’s definitely possible to get hired without work study).

In addition to looking on Callisto or Work Study website, you can ask among your friends who work on campus if their supervisors are looking for new people and if so could they provide a referral, it increases your chances of being hired.

I personally preferred a desk job (which I did get) to cashiering or food service because I got to be in an office, in front of a computer, no need to interact with the masses etc.

Thanks for the reply guys. When is the best time to start looking for a job? When do employers start hiring for summer?

Based on your first post, by “employer” you mean campus departments? For administrative jobs usually pretty late, around April/May for an almost immediate start. Last summer I discovered in mid-June that I had more time than anticipated and wanted to work more hours; I was able to find and get a(nother) job within 2 weeks (I do not have work study, nor do I possess a rare and highly desirable skill set).

Thanks Agneisse! Could you recommend a couple of desk jobs I could apply for? I can only think of those security monitors in library, rescomp clerks, and those APR clerks…

Okay, so the more common (hiring larger numbers) jobs like dorm security monitors, Microcomputing staff, mail room clerks etc. have centralized hiring processes and early deadlines, keep an eye out for those (I think some deadlines, such as the one for tour guides, have already passed).

On a smaller scale, most if not all academic departments, research institutes, college and university administration offices hire students to make photocopies, file documents, fill out routine forms, book flights, read evaluations etc., and they post on Work Study and sometimes Callisto. These positions open up somewhat randomly (but are more concentrated at end/start of semesters), are usually less painful to apply for but you’re also less likely to hear back, and knowing someone really helps.

Cal Dining appears to hire throughout the year. I’ve never worked for them, but I think you get free food.

Cal dining is probably the most ideal with hours, food, and location and all that. And pay.

A lot of restaurants hire at that time, or you can try in sf. If your on financial aid, there are some mentor programs that pay like 12 bucks!
