hey y’all: I made an account just for this, so i could ask this question.
so our school year is wrapping up, and i just became aware of a situation. my computer science class requires a 60% average or higher on my projects in order for me to pass the class, and i ended up getting a zero on one of my projects because i turned it in an hour late. i talked to my instructor, and he said that he wouldn’t budge on this policy, and neither would he give back points on it.
i got into a good school with a full-ride scholarship. once i send in my grades, will they just unilaterally revoke my offer of admission? i’m really worried about this, and i don’t want to not go to college. HELP!
If you are actually going to fail the class, you need to contact your college before it even happens. Confirm that your average isn’t enough to keep you from getting a D or an F. If you are definitely getting a D or an F, go see your GC asap and ask her/him for their advice- they may know more about the particular school, and may even know somebody there. But whatever you do, don’t let your college get your end of year transcripts with a D or an F and no warning.
Sorry to kick someone who’s down already, but your phrasing seems a little disingenuous- pretty sure you have known from the beginning what the rules of the game were. Own your responsibility here.
An “F” could be troublesome. But it also depends on the college who admitted you and the grades of your other classes. For instances, if you have straight "A"s in all other courses but only failed this class due to a special project requirement, you may have a relatively stronger case when arguing with the college. College usually does not want to rescind students. Therefore, give them a strong case so that they may excuse you.
No matter what, contact the college and explain it. You may go to seek some advice from your school counselor on how to talk the issue with college admission office before the call.
Good luck!
thank you all so much for your input!
A quick update: the instructor actually ended up relenting on this policy and changing the required average to a 50%, and thankfully my test average is high enough that there is a high probability that I can end up with a B in the class. a B is definitely not as bad as an F, so I’ll do my best on the final!
So glad it worked out for you! These situations usually work themselves out. Any teacher willing to cost a kid a full ride scholarship over a single project is probably in the wrong profession.
A “B” surely will lead to no problem. Very glad of this good news.
Can you get the CS project grade fixed with some kind of exception? Would a note from your religious leader help?
Same for the history exam? Although doing poorly because it was the same day as a scholarship interview seems less compelling.
I tried getting it fixed, but my instructor wouldn’t budge on his late policy. I’m really worried, will this end up getting me rescinded?
You’re not getting rescinded for a single C.
I guess my concern is the worst case scenario. All our assignments for the semester are already submitted, and I’m just waiting on my grades. There’s really nothing I can do to change my grades at this point, so would you think the worst case scenario (2 C’s and 4 A’s) would end up getting me rescinded?
No. Two 'C’s will not get you rescinded. Having said that, try to avoid the second C.
Just a quick update: turns out I got REALLY lucky in my History class, and ended up with an A. Final grades are released, and I did end up with a C in computer science. However, my explanation for my C in CS is pretty solid, as I stated above, I have a solid reason for the C (my project worth 10% of our final grade), and I’m pretty sure the AO would understand.
Just for my own satisfaction, can a single C (the worst case scenario, I don’t end up making my case to admissions) get me rescinded?
