Getting Classes at SMC

Any SMC students out there, do you think it'd be impossible to get my classes now?

My seminar is on the 24th of August, and I'd only be able to sign up after that date...

I know... It's very VERY late, but the office lost my app for a while, so my I-20 arrived late. :(

I need to take Calculus or Stat, Chemistry, Anatomy, Physiology...

Do you think I'll be able to get any of these classes?

I'm an international student so I HAVE TO enroll in at least 12 units.

I just don't want to take bogus classes that won't help me transfer. :P

Thanks in advance for any comments. :)

You’re going to have a rough first day. Your best bet at this point (I’m assuming you’ve already tried enrolling online but most or all of the classes are full) is to go to your desired class on the first day and try to “crash” into the course.

This usually consists of a lottery (done in class) which decides who gets to be in the class. If you get lucky then great, but more often than not you will be (abruptly sometimes even) shoo’d from the class.

Yeah, I’ve been trying to enroll, but there are no more classes.

I signed up for Dream Weavers and Soccer which is completely random, but those are the only classes I can find so far…

Perhaps it’d be better to take independent studies in something more relevant? :P

So does the lottery take place only if already enrolled students don’t show up for class?

And thanks for the info galbitang. :)

Is it possible for an international student to enroll in smc and another cc at the same time?

I know that cal citizens do this, but I’m just making sure.

^ Yes, I know a couple of international students that took classes at different CCs in a semester.

Try adding classes a few days before school starts… Just keep hitting refresh all day. Students will be dropping, but you need to add immmediately.

Thanks for the advice! :)

Hi guys! On a lot of pages I’m reading that it is almost impossible to get the classes you need at SMC and it’s even harder if you’re a new student. But I wanted to know from people that actually went to SMC, have you all had problems getting classes? And would it even be hard if you enrolled as soon as enrollment started?

Or does it only become more difficult when you don’t sign up immediately at your enrollment time?

Why would you bump a 4 year old post?!

Just plan what you want and have some back ups. Generally, they offer enough of the important classes that you will get one, even if it is not your first choice. Or, you can join a program like Scholars or EOPS to get priority. Also, the more units you accumulate, the better your enrollment date, up until like 70 units.

Next time, please just make a new post.

It’s somewhat difficult to get the classes you want if you’re not in a program that grants priority enrollment or something like that. I could only get the classes I needed and not necessarily the ones I wanted until I joined SMC’s scholars program.

Thanks a lot for the answers!
And I’m sorry, am new to college confidential so I had no idea! but thanks again
