The other day, this girl in my grade went on College Confidential and found a chance thread I posted. She then discovered that the OP was me after she noticed that my posted course selections, (maybe) my SAT scores, and extracurriculars (some of which are unique to just me) all matched with my profile. Afterwards, she showed my CC post to many of my classmates and now (almost) everybody at my school knows about it. Has this ever happened to any of you? What did you do about it?

this never happened to me because I never dared put up my stats like that. Having your school know is one thing but what if adcom sees your stuff and forms an opinion of you before they read your essay? Do you want a 15 second online post to be your first impression or the paper you worked on for hours to be your first impression?

Pitfalls of the internet. This is why you need to be mindful of what you post on these boards – and any board, for that matter.

@ Necrophiliac

First of all – Necrophiliac? Lolz. Probably the best username I’ve seen on this site. But second of all – do you really think adcoms read College Confidential? They’re a busy lot, and wouldn’t waste their time trying to match applications with chance threads. It’s just not realistic.

i agree with photographer. They are far too busy to go beyond what they already have. A representative for Princeton told me that while she reads the applications, she actually turns off her computer, as to force away all distractions.

@saints2009: That has never happened to me. Is there any way you can delete some of those posts that are unique to you? Maybe just e-mail cc and let them know of your situation. I’m sorry, hope it gets better!

Sorta happened to me. Don’t really care, though I was a bit worried when people found out at first

You can’t delete posts; occasionally you can edit them into something like “DELETED”.

That being said, adcom really doesn’t have the time to filter through all the CC BS. And here’s another thought:

Suppose you know the stats of a competitor. Then you can make a chance thread, and then act like a complete ******… should adcom reject your competitor because there is a chance that they wrote the CC post (keep in mind, in reality YOU wrote that post…)

QED, adcom does not care.

I refuse to put any personal info on here because I know if someone from my school reads it they WILL know its me.
I’ve found a few people from my school on here just by what classes they’ve taken and what extracurriculars they do. If you go to a small college prep school its really not hard on this site.

how does it matter if they know your scores or activities. its not like they are secrets or anything i mean that cant harm you in any way. relax buddy

You guys are very rare cases because realistically speaking there are over 100,000 members at CC and if a person could recognize you based on “a bit of extracurricular info”, either you poured too much of your hearts out on this website or the person who found you has nothing better to do with their life but analyze every single detail of your background to be able to point you out…

Yea, I’ve found a lot of people on this forum that I’ve recognized. Even one current poster on the UPenn one. But it’s just like oh cool, w/e.

yep, and I found my friends too!
