I would really like to get into UT, but unfortunately I am twelve people away from the top ten percent. I go to a really competitive high school though, maybe that will help. It is one of the most competitive in the state. By the end of junior year I will have finished eight AP tests, Eagle Scout, 1440 SAT. All the AP tests I took before I got 5's on. Am also in robotics which counts as Ap at my school on top of all the above stuff. I am thinking of engineering, especially aeronautical engineering. I also would like to learn a language, either Arabic or Chinese, preferably Arabic. With UT being a top ten school for aeronautical engineering and the Arabic Flagship program I thought UT would be perfect for me. If anyone could offer me any tips to get in I would really appreciate it. I had a lot of EC act. but would be too long to list, they are good but not huge. Will be taking seven or eight AP classes senior year, my school is so competitive that getting a single B in any AP class will mean you are not in the top ten percent, and I am unfortunately getting a B in one ): Should I apply to engineering first and then liberal arts second if i wanted to do the Arabic Flagship program in order to get into UT? I want to double major in both Arabic and engineering so getting in engineering would be a must

Exactly what is your class rank (%). You still have time to bring that up, definitely possible for you to get in top ten. With that SAT, id say you’ needa be top 12% at most. U are in sate right?

I’m an '09 admit to the university for Plan II and I was looking to go down the AFP route myself. I did a few back and forths with the department there, and most likely you will have to take two courses of Arabic at the University before you can apply for entry into the program.

I get where you’re coming from because this was basically my deciding factor about coming to UT. They are starting better marketing for a summer accelerated program for arabic this year (maybe my lobbying did have some minor impact) as the Hindi/Urdu program already has, but this is not for direct entry into program as is the case with the Hindi one.

I think that they would prefer to know that you have strong background in Arabic, or if not (as it will be in my case) have proven your commitment through course signups and excellence.

Good luck, hope to see you in Austin. :)

P.S.
You don’t need to be an Arabic major or a Liberal Arts person to get in the program. You just need to fulfill their specific requirements. You should definitely put Engineering first though, as it will be more difficult to get into than the Liberal arts and some schools are picky like that (wanting to be put as 1st choice), especially the honors.

Based on what you’ve told us, I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Nothing’s guaranteed, but I’d say your chances are solid. You could probably be in the top 25% at a high school like yours and still have a decent shot.

1440 out of?

And also, UT considers the Writing component of SAT starting this application year. What’s your total score out of 2400?

1440 out of 1600
2090 out of 2400, ): got only a 650 on writing, thought UT didn’t consider it though

Class rank just barely top 12 percent

Hoping to bring it up, will be taking eight AP classes senior year 1st semester, 7 second semester, if that doesn’t get me in the top ten percent, well ? The amount of people admitted due to top ten percent rule is supposed to be about 85% to 90% when I apply so I am worried.

From my standpoint, you have a really good shot. Did you have good extra curriculars and essays?

To me it sounds like with the number of AP classes you’re taking next year and with your attitude you probably have a good chance in getting closer to being in the top 10% of your class.
I’m applying there next year as well, so when that time comes, good luck to you :)
