Hi,
Lately Brown has been looking very, very appealing to me. I was looking at the website one day, and got sidetracked to the art department where I saw that they have portfolio admissions for anyone who’s thinking about majoring in art/design.

Questions:
-Has anyone gone through this process? How selective is it? Do they prefer certain genres of art?
-Can you apply through your portfolio along with your academics? If you get accepted by one and denied by the other, what does that do?
-If you plan on double majoring in something besides art, is that possible? Can you get accepted into art, then change your major into something else?

So far as I know, admissions at Brown is always a whole-picture thing. You will not "get accepted by one and denied by the other;" decisions are made by the admissions department, no one else. Likewise, you will not be accepted to a single program, but to the school as a whole.

I don't believe that Brown is any different from other schools that consider special talents and encourage candidates to send in supplementals. My S sent his slide portfolio of his illustrations and hopefully they forwarded it to the art dept.
Where did you see "portfolio admissions"?

Students who send supplimental art portfolios (or for that matter, a music one) to Brown go through the normal Admissions review, and after the "first cuts", the materials are sent for an extra "opinion" to the Art department, who have a faculty committee that meets to review all the portfolios all at once, at the very end of the admissions cycle. The Art department may recommend that student on the basis of their talents and abilities. But, as most people will tell you, your work has to really really stand out to make much of a difference in your application.

oh, so if it's bad, it doesn't count against you? like if the art professors just make a list of the students were were really good, and then the other applicants just get ignored, in terms of special consideration for art...

I believe that sending in a bad portfolio probably would hurt you. Why would one send in anything that could be construed as anything less than excellent in such a competetive environment? It would arouse ridicule, most likely...and that would hurt.

A bad portfolio/music tape DOESN'T hurt you, at least at Brown. The art/music department will either send a good recommendation or no recommendation at all back to the admissions office. So, if your portfolio isn't exceptional, you application will be evaluated as if you hadn't sent in a portfolio at all.

I sent in my art portfolio too.. with 14 slides of my paintings/drawings/sketches.
I don't know how much it will help.. anyhoo.. time will tell.... less than 12 hours!!

Good luCk!!!
