A very general question, but, I'm an IB student and I was wondering how to get into this school. Right now I am going to 11th grade and I did lacrosse last year, and will also do it this year. I was wondering what I will need (grades, ap scores, gpa, sat, act, psat, etc.) to get into this school. Thanks

AP scores: useless, but AP classes are necessary since most students take these classes. However what’s the point of taking an AP class and not taking the exam. I would suggest anything above honors classes. Take the most rigorous schedule possible.

PSAT: Useless in college admissions, unless you are trying to qualify to be a finalist in the competition.

SAT/ACT: Very important: Depending on the school you will need at least a 1920 to have a very good chance of acceptance. Mainly try to score over a 2000. Getting above a 30 on your ACT will also improve your chances of getting accepted especially if you are an out of state student.

GPA: Average GPA for entering freshman is between a 3.7-3.9 U-M GPA. U-M only counts core classes and they take your sophomore and Jr. years into account.

I have a question, I’m from Michigan and only want to stay in Michigan, it’s alright that I don’t take the SAT while applying to U of M? My stats are really good except for a slightly lower Michigan GPA (3.6 compared to the average 3.7)

I was told in high school (two years ago) that I only needed to take the SAT if I went someplace out of state. I’ve only taken the ACT and I got in.

Yeah, most people from Michigan only take the ACT.

You can take the SAT or ACT. I myself will be taking the SAT in October, eventhough I’m looking at schools in-state and out of state, I think the ACT is also accepted in other states.

Recently, the ACT has become accepted all across the country.

Will it be looked down upon to not take the SAT?

Unless a school emphasis/ suggest a certain test than no.

No azn, even if you send both SAT and ACT, they will only look at one. I know lots of people who did perfectly fine on the SAT, but are still not sending it because they did a little better on the ACT, and there’s no point in sending both. Also, an admissions officer also told me that the far majority of public high schools in Michigan send in only the ACT and it’s fine. If you do bad on the ACT though, you might want to take the SAT if you think you can do better…

Do you have a source for this? I didn’t know this was true.

MagicFan – I suspect Entertainer isn’t familiar with the IB curriculum re: comment about APs. If your school ALSO offers AP, fine, but if you are working toward Theory of Knowledge, those courses are considered equally rigorous for a well-regarded program. So do not worry or switch schools over the APs.
