Just had a quick question to some of the veteran Furman parents in terms of how to get into a "Full" class. D is trying get a fourth class for the fall but is having difficulty finding an acceptable open class. She has finished/scheduled for most of the GERs and she is still undecided in her major so getting that 4th class is becoming difficult. I was just wondering what the protocol or inside track is for trying to get an exception into a full class. She noticed there are many classes with negative available seats and did not know what was possible for a rising sophomore to request. Can they possibly contact the professor directly or would that be bad form. Just looking for some inside tips from those who have negotiated the ARMS process over the years.

She can e-mail the professor. My daughter has done that in the past - with mixed results.

Agree with ernchurl-emailing the professor may help and also being in touch with her advisor. If enrollment is up, the administration may be looking for adjunct professors to teach additional classes, so the enrollment per class is probably very fluid. Also, I don’t know what classes she has already registered for, but remember the first semester as a freshmen can be especially difficult-perhaps considering an elective that she will need with a professor with high ratings on RateMyProfessor would be a good idea. Good luck-we are all here to help make the transition easier.

People also drop out of classes all summer long, especially in August. If she is persistent in checking ARMS she should be able to find an opening.
