Hi - my daughter is going to orientation at the end of June. Will there be any classes left open to register for? She is in honors but based on other posts here, I don't think this makes a difference for the first semester freshman registration. Will she have any good class or teacher choices left by the end of June? Thanks!

Next, your D and those starting Fall register for fall classes PRIOR to those who start Summer term. Those who start Summer C will register for classes only for summer term at orientation, and after ALL Fall freshman enrollees register for Fall at orientation, the summer kids finally have at it in July.

My D started Summer last year as a freshman, and had no problem getting classes she wanted. None. Even after all the Fall freshman had registered.

Honors students are the only ones who can take the honors secctions of courses, and there are PLENTY for freshman. If she wants to take an honors English or Chem or Bio, she will likely not be closed out. And even for nonhonors sections, there are lots available. For nonhonors sections, they leave popular classes with section that are closed until orientations progress and then they open up new sections.

What is your daughter’s major/area of interest?

She wants to double major - Creative Writing with either Chinese / Biology / History / Psychology

She isn’t sure which one is the second choice and wants a taste of them all. I don’t even know how to help her prep for her registration as there are so many different interests for her it will be difficult to choose!

During EACH orientation the open up a block of seats for each class.
So say 10 different orientation sessions then 1/10 of the seats open up at each orientation.
That is the only way to keep it fair for the later orientation dates.

From what I observed at orientation:

When we were registering for Fall Term classes, for some COURSES there were as much as 20 CLASSES for me to pick from. Some had more seats than others; for example some CLASSES had 40 seats max, and then others had like 130 max, even though they were the same COURSE. And also, within a given COURSE, some CLASSES open for registration were restricted to majors only.

Considering the amount of courses and classes to choose from, I think there is a good chance to get into your preferred course within a school year. It may not be first semester, but in the second semester it can be available. Also, some COURSES were not available for the Fall Semester at all.

IDK if they are adding openings with each orientation, but from the way things looked to me, the students who go to earlier orientations have an advantage.

My overall impression is that you will get the courses you want, but as a freshman, maybe not the times you want. My guess is that you can get the class, you may just be going at 8 AM, that’s all.

Sometimes course fill up and are unavailable to freshmen or are available only in the fall. This phenomenon lessens as you advance.

Honors students get priority in registration and should experience little of this.
