I’m going to do early decision to Cal Poly SLO this October. I have a ~3 GPA and 27 ACT. I want to major in business but am wondering if I should pick a less sought after major to apply in and switch when I get in. I’ve heard it’s pretty hard to switch but I also have friends who have done this with similar academic records and switched easily. Is the business program hard to switch into? If I did declare another major when applying…what major would you recommend? I’m into business, technology, bit of computing, and film. Thanks for any help!
Business is a difficult major to switch into but anything is possible. What will you do if you cannot switch? What other major did you have in mind? It is always easier to switch from a competitive major to a non-competitive major than the reverse. Also admissions is pretty savy when it comes to applicants trying to get in by the “back door” that is why they do make it difficult to switch along with already starting you out in your major classes 1st quarter as a Freshman.
Is your CP GPA 3.0??? Average Stats for the School of Business is a CP GPA of 3.99 and ACT of 30/SAT of 1330 (M+CR).
I don’t know what else I could major in. My dream would be a major in business with an emphasis in entrepreneurship and minor in computer sciences. I definitely want to focus on the whole entrepreneurship aspect rather than just coding. My second choice is SJSU. Yes my CP GPA is 3.0. Freshman year was my worse and my junior year was the best…I was just quote lazy through high school. Anything else you would recommend for Cal Poly…or even SJSU? (If that seems like a fitting school idk)
Both SLO and SJSU’'s businees program are probably out of reach for you.
I’d suggest you take a look at Sac State,Sonoma Northridge and perhaps SF State, Solid biz programs all accessible to you.
Would applying to SJSU undeclared or under a different major help me at all? Those are definitely my top 2 schools above the others.
What is your regular CSU GPA since SJSU publishes their Eligibility index for each major, so you check your EI against the list and see how you compare.
EI: (CSU GPAx800) +(SAT M+CR) or (CSU GPAx200) + (ACT compositex10)

Remember that the EI thresholds will change yearly depending upon the applicant pool.
If you are set on attending SLO and switching majors, you best bet would be to apply to the Industrial Technology major in the business school and then try to switch to Business Administration. Just remember, if you did not originally qualify for the Bus Admin major as a Freshman applicant, you may not be able to change.
I got 870, with business’ minimum at 805…is this bad, decent?
No, a 870 EI puts you above the 805 cutoff from this year, so SJSU could be a match school. EI’s will fluctuate from year to year depending upon the competitiveness of the applicants, so you look good for SJSU. SLO is a Reach unless you are willing to gamble and apply for a less competitive major and then try to switch.
With an 870 EI, SJSU should be a piece of cake.
I’d still give Sac and Northridge a shot. Though they could go either way, I encourage you to apply to Fullerton and Chico as well. Their business programs are well respected and, at this stage of your life, having options is a good thing.
Cool. I think I will apply both schools with early admissions and declare Business at SJSU and IT at Cal Poly. Do either care about work experience? I’ve had a lot of jobs and had to work through my whole junior
Thanks for the other suggestions! I’ll be looking at the other colleges recommended. Do you think I would be able to go to business administration from IT at cal poly? I’m also looking to minor in computer sciences if any schools have great programs for both!
SLO is the only school with ED. SJSU only has RD, plus you can only apply ED to 1 school in an admissions cycle.
Switching majors will depend upon these factors according to the SLO website:
Change of Major eligibility – the majors for which the student was eligible at time of admission
College academic record (e.g., GPA, coursework, etc.), and
Remaining coursework and the student’s ability to complete degree requirements in the new major within the published unit maximum requirements for the major
CS at both schools is excellent, but you need to do some research if a minor is possible at either school.
Awesome. Anyone hear anything about CUNY Baruch College and Zicklin School of Business?
Your CPSLO GPA will be different than the rest of the CSU. CPSLO include 9th grade grades; the other CSU (and UC) only consider 10th & 11th grade grades.
