Okay so this is more of a hypothetical thread because I just got out of high school and I'm gonna be going to UCSC this fall. Im a planned physics major and I really want to get into UC Davis for Fall 2013. Right now, Im taking 14 units (3 classes) at my community college for the summer quarter to get me a headstart for my one year transfer. Ill have all my prerequisites for my major completed by Spring 2013, except for 2 math courses and 1 physics course. How adversely will this impact my chances of getting into UC Davis? Even though Im transferring in one year, Ill still be a junior level transfer, not a lower division transfer because Ill have 103 credits (from AP testing and everything). Assuming I maintain a 3.5+ GPA in all my classes right now (summer quarter) and all my classes next year at UCSC, do you guys think that Ill still make it in, even though Im missing 3 prerequisite courses? Physics is definitely not an impacted class at Davis, soooo I should technically be good right?

Thoughts? Thanks for your input! :)

I really can’t comment on missing prerequisites specifically for Physics although 3 is a lot to be missing, especially the 2 out of 4 math classes. Will you be taking the 2 chemistry courses recommended (but not required) by UCD? If missing those prerequisites will prevent you from taking upper division classes at UCD immediately and cause you to take longer to graduate, they may reject you.

Honestly, you’re much better off going to community college. Why waste a year of tuition+housing at UCSC? What happens if you get rejected, are you willing to pay for a 2nd year at UCSC?

Okay, so I just checked with UCSC’s math department about prerequisites for Linear Algebra and Differential Equations (the two math classes which I assumed that I was going to be missing) and turns out, they do not have to be taken one after another. I can accommodate them both into my schedule and take them concurrently (ie. I’ll be taking Multivariable Calc Part 1 and Linear Algebra concurrently during Winter 2013, and Multivariable Calc Part 2 and Differential Equations concurrently during Spring 2013).

Basically, all my math courses will be fulfilled and I’ll only be missing the last class of Physics (and Chem 1B, which is recommended but not required). Will this put me at a better chance of being accepted to Davis?

I realize that CC is easier/cheaper, but money isn’t a problem anyways because I got a full scholarship and going to UCSC for that first year will give that “UC freshman experience” as well.

Also, Electrical Engineering is something that I’m leaning towards right now and the Physics major has the exact same lower division classes as EE. I’ve heard people say that transferring to engineering from a non-engineering major is relatively easy at Davis and that you just need to maintain a decent GPA in order to transfer. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks again! :)
