Getting into Georgetown with a 3.1 gpa

Hello all, I am in a confusing situation currently because I am debating whether it even makes sense for me to apply to Georgetown University. I believe my GPA will completely ruin my chances of even being considered. To tell everyone a little about my highschool career, I have been attending a small public school in NYC since my sophomore year of high-school(currently I am about to enter senior year.)Just this past summer I was awarded a scholarship from the Korean consulate general to study abroad in Korea for the entire month of July as a result of my performance in Korean class at school. I have also self taught myself Mandarin Chinese and have been doing so for 5 years. So, I am currently proficient in Korean Chinese and fluent in English. My GPA is quite low because of my sophomore year when my average tended to only be around 82. However I ended Junior year with a 89 average. Seeing as how my school did not offer AP classes until this year, I was unable to take them until now. However, this year I will be taking AP English. Also, I will also be the 12 grade representative for my schools student government and I am a member of photography club and I will join the gay straight alliance this year. I frequently usher at my church on Sunday's and I am now doing a volunteer internship being part of John Liu's campaign(he is running for NYC Mayor) My SAT scores are pretty low at 1510 but I hope to raise them to 1900 by December of this year. So my question is simply, does it even make sense for me to apply to Georgetown University?

Hey- when I read this I almost thought that I wrote it! We are basically in the same boat and we’re from NYC. I want to apply to Georgetown (dream school) but my average isn’t so stellar. And after a meeting with my guidance counselor I almost gave up hope completely. But to be honest, after reading what you said about being awarded to study abroad and teaching yourself Mandarin Chinese, that’s pretty impressive. And all your extracirriculars are really solid. Obviously the GPA and SAT score will weigh you down, they’res no doubt about that- just like they’ll weigh me down. But schools like to see an upward trend in grades, so it’s good that yours have improved over the course of your schooling. Honestly if you sell yourself well with the extracurriculars, rock the interview and get your academics up a bit then you have a good chance like everyone else. Just show them you have a passion for something and that you aren’t the cookie cutter 4.0 Valedictorian. I say you should totally apply, I know I will. And who knows? Maybe we’ll both get lucky. Good luck!

I mean, you can apply, but even if you manage a 1900 on your SAT, Georgetown will be a reach. You have some very interesting extracurriculars but those aren’t the end-all be-all of college admissions.

I won’t discourage you, but I’ll tell you that you should definitely not expect an acceptance. Go make a list of schools that are a mix of match, safety, and reach. What are your family’s finances like?

The short answer: yes.

Sure, you can apply. People with low scores do get in, if they have other factors going for them.

However, a 3.1 GPA coupled with a 1510 SAT is really on the low end–the SAT, especially, since you’re only a few points above the national average (1497). You should try to bring that up as much as you can. Even a 1900 SAT isn’t great, for Georgetown, but it would significantly improve your chances.

WOW! That it so cool to hear! I am glad to see that there are other people out her, and so close to me that are in the same situation! I will apply and be sure to raise my gpa and SAT scores! I hope we can both get in! I wish you the absolute best of luck in applying to Georgetown!!

I am an only child but I am only raised by my dad who works two jobs. My mom left when I was 3 I believe my average family income is about $50,000

For Georgetown, class rank, gpa and scores are listed as very important. EC’s are listed as important. The 25th percentile for CR is 640, for math 650 and ATC 29. 97% were in the top 25% of their graduating class. What is your math + CR score? If you hope for any shot at all you should retake the SAT after a through prep. There are tips in the pinned threads in the SAT-preparation subforum.

You have some nice EC’s that shows you will be a valuable student somewhere. Work on your picks for more realistic schools where you are not such a long shot.

Ambity: if you have a culm 3.1 GPA, how much can you raise it with one semester to go? Even if you get a 4.0 this semester, your culm GPA goes to 3.2.

Like others have tried to nicely say to you: If you’re not a recruited athlete or have some other monster hook, you’re an almost impossible candidate for a school as selective as Georgetown. Please speak with your guid counselor and craft a broader list of target colleges.
