Hi all,
I am about to graduate high school with a 1.9 GPA. Bad, I know. I struggled with mental illness through all my years of high school, and have only recently started to figure things out. I’m a very good student now, and am receiving all A’s in my last semester of school and taking 4 AP tests this year. I was wondering if I would even have a chance of getting accepted into the Tisch program if I were to first attend community college for two years, and have a stellar GPA. Does my high school career ruin my future dreams? I got a 26 on the ACT and a 1400 on the SAT
Hey - I am no expert, just a parent. The Tisch folks told us that the freshman admission evaluation was 1/2 talent (portfolio/audition) and 1/2 academics. So the question really is have you been developing your art in high school and can you build an impressive enough portfolio of work as you get stellar grades in community college that those two items will counteract the poor high school record. If I were you I’d concentrate on continuing the upward progression and then ask the question about NYU-readiness in another 18 months when you have a better idea of where you are at that point.
Thank you so much for your reply!
I know a few people who had very similar GPA in high school, went to a community college or low ranked university, did very well, and then transferred to a university which is ranked just as high as NYU if not higher. This is possible.
You will need to do quite well at community college, and it is possible that you might need two years at community college. However, you can do this if you are willing to put in the work. Good luck and best wishes.
