My D and I just did a long, rainy day at NYU and I came away with a question. In the general NYU session, the woman said that their average SAT was high 600’s and the average ACT was 32-33. I know Tisch has slightly different academic requirements than other schools at NYU, that they don’t require SAT II’s, for example. But I was wondering if anyone had any inside info on the average test scores for Tisch accepted applicants.

A little “inside info”–the guy who ran the info session said that next year they would probably add a dance component to the Musical Theatre audition.

We both loved the program, but were a little frustrated at how little of the actual facilities we saw with regards to Tisch, but I guess that’s understandable.

There are no statistics on Tisch accepted students’ test scores and GPA or class rank. They would be what is publihsed for NYU itself.

Avg. HS GPA: 3.63

Mid 50% SAT range: 1300-1440 **just the CR and M combined

ACT mid 50% range: 29-31

Percent ranked in the top 10% of their HS class: 72%

That was for the fall of 2008 and so it remains to be seen for this coming fall’s incoming class.

Please also remember that NYU is not just about a GPA and test score but much more holistic admissions. The rigor of the HS curriculum chosen will matter. The recs will matter. Same with the essays and activities. For example, someone with a 1400 SAT and a 3.7 GPA could be rejected when someone with a 1300 SAT and a 3.5 GPA is accepted because there is way more to it than numbers alone. That said, those whose stats are in this ballpark have a realitic chance of getting in ACADEMICALLY and those who fall below it may get in but at a lower rate of acceptance.

You also have to figure in that NYU itself (the entire university) has an acceptance rate of 25% which is pretty selective even IF you have the stats in the ballpark. Then, of course, Tisch’s BFA programs have a lower rate of admission than the university as a whole. Academics count 50% of the Tisch admissions decision.

Given the thousands of students who visit NYU and Tisch every year, I can understand the limitations in sitting in on studio classes as it would impact the studio work on a daily basis. You can sit in on academic type classes, however.
