Getting into OSU with 28 ACT and 3.7 GPA

I am a senior in high school at an early college high school. I am white and middle class. I have worked a job 40 hours a week each summer, I started a non profit organization that raised over $4,000, I have been the captain of my hockey team 2 years in a row, played lacrosse, volunteered at my church several hours a week, volunteered at a hockey clinic, and I spend 2 hours each week in church. I have a 28 on my ACT, a 3.7 weighted GPA. I have been taking college classes since freshman year of high school and full loads since junior year. I am currently taking classes at OSU marion, that might give me a boost, and I am looking to graduate high school with all of my prequisites done in order to apply for the fisher college of business, meaning start college technically as a junior. The essay that I wrote was pretty creative, so do I have what it takes?

Will you be receiving an AA from OSU Marion? http://osumarion.osu.edu/academics/majors/associate-of-arts-degree.html

I’ve never heard of a student who would qualify to transfer to main from a branch that meets the requirements being denied admission to main campus.

Here is direct admit to Fisher info. https://fisher.osu.edu/undergraduate/admissions/future-students (Click Domestic Freshmen to reveal drop down info.) your ACT isn’t high enough but perhaps you meet the alternate requirement top 20% of class?

You can review the transfer student requirements at that link, too. (Click Transfer Students Domestic) which given the number of credits you’ve earn may be your way in.

Oops, I meant this link as an internal university candidate to get into Fisher https://fisher.osu.edu/undergraduate/admissions/current-osu-students

You may want to take your ACT again since you are close to a bump up in merit aid and assurance of being a direct admit to Fisher. See Trustees Scholarship http://undergrad.osu.edu/cost-and-aid/merit-based-scholarships

The way that I went about taking the classes, enabled me to transfer directly to fisher, rather than having an AA.I just figured that an associates degree wouldn’t be useful if I wasted credit hours on electives I didn’t need if I was going to get a bachelors any ways. Only trouble with this is, I’ve been told that since I am not technically a student of OSU, I am still an academy student (College Credit +), that I will be considered as an equal to anyone else. I was told that I am technically not transferring because I am still in high school. Is there anyway around this? If I take classes during the summer would that then make me a transfer student?

I think you are in good shape. OSU let my D into a very competitive engineering program based on her performance at Marion (rather than her ACT). If you have prioritized your college credit plus classes to assure you meet transfer requirements into your major I think you did the right thing. My S just happened to meet the AA, which surprised us so he plans to get one since it reinforces his Junior rank within the university as well and we hope that will ‘age him up’ to have a better chance at landing internships.

Good job btw! You are an excellent candidate for Fisher and if I made the decisions you’d be at the top of my list.

And if for some odd reason you don’t make it in, you can always just request to transfer down. That was our backup plan with D and will be with S as well. We haven’t had to do it, but I’m sure Marion will help you figure it out if it comes to that.

Thank you some much I greatly appreciate the kind words. You sound very informed, is there anybody to talk to directly when applying to let them know my situation, like I just told you? Also, what do you mean by transfer down?

‘Transfer down’ as in transfer from the OSU Marion branch to main campus and be assigned an academic advisor at main campus to begin scheduling classes in Columbus rather than Marion.

OSU does holistic review of applications. You can include your OSU Marion experiences in your essay or supplementary material. Louis Hominga is an excellent resource who may be able to advise you further on your application. I would also suggest you ask a business professor you’ve had if they would be willing to provide a letter of recommendation. That business professor may be able to provide you with insight for Fisher admission as well.

Best of Luck!

You have a head start, but at the same time you will not have a traditional Freshman year. You must get to the career services offices at the beginning of your first semester and start looking for internships and co-ops right away. Do not refer to yourself as a freshman but rather your earned rank by credit hour. If you will have 4 semesters left that leaves ONE summer to get an internship in before graduation. If you get an offer for multiple semester internships, take it. It is much more important to have work experience and grow your network than to graduate asap.

Thank you so much for all of your help!
