Getting into SDSU with low GPA but above average SAT?

I've researched this and am getting mixed messages, some say that you can get in with a low GPA, but others say that it's an impacted campus so you have to have atleast a 3.5 to be admitted. So here it goes:

My reported GPA was 2.74 (weighted) and my SAT scores are around 1800. I know that extra-curriculars don't matter (which sucks because I have a TON of great things for that) but does taking AP classes or passing the AP tests give any extra boost? I took APE 11 and APUSH last year, and passed both exams. I'm also currently taking APG and APE 12. San Diego State is the only school that I've applied to, so I'm really anxious about it. Any information would be helpful, thanks.

I hate to say it, but only 3% of people get into San Diego State with your GPA. While they may look at your AP classes a bit higher, I would try applying to other schools, or going to community college and then transferring to San Diego State.
Since it’s a state school the ECs are less important, however they are many private schools that have acceptance rates within your GPA range. I would try them; however, most are more expensive than a state school, and (I don’t know your income level) financial aid might be slim to none.

Do you live in their local admission area? That gets extra points.

"First-Time Freshmen Admission Criteria
Fall 2010

Due to the severity of the California state budget, all first-time freshmen applicants will be admitted to the pre-major (including undeclared) in which they applied. There will be a limited number of enrollment slots in each pre-major. Applicants will be ranked by their Eligibility Index, which is a combination of GPA and SAT/ACT test scores. In addition, students must complete the pattern of college preparatory curriculum (“a-g” courses) by the end of spring 2010. All applicants are strongly encouraged to have alternate education plans.

SDSU service-area applicants will be assigned a credit to increase their eligibility so SDSU can maintain its traditional balance of out-of-area to in-area students. Students are in SDSU’s service area if they graduate from a high school in San Diego County located south of state route 56 and extending eastward AND Imperial County high schools."

Outside Service Area First-Time Freshmen Admission Criteria Fall 2010

San Diego State University will have a very limited number of fall 2010 first-time freshmen enrollment slots due to the severity of the California state budget. All applicants are strongly encouraged to have alternate education plans. Information on this sheet is subject to change based on CSU enrollment directives.

You will be admitted if you:

* Meet SDSU’s competitive eligibility index criteria for applicants graduating from a high school outside of SDSU’s service area.

 • Complete the pattern of college preparatory curriculum (“a-g” courses) by the end of spring 2010.

For fall 2009, the average eligibility index of admitted freshmen who met the selective criteria was 4,228 (1,024 if based on ACT). The average high school grade point average was 3.81. The average SAT Reasoning Test total score was 1,179; the average ACT composite score was 26. The eligibility index for fall 2010 may be higher.

For a 3.2 GPA and a 1230 M+R SAT, it’s about 3790.
