Getting into Smith College

I recently got interested in Smith College. I don’t have really good grades but I’ve always been very involved with school and I am in 5 clubs. And was in a couple of sports. I could probably get good recommendations. Would I still have a chance?

You have to give more details. What is your unweighted GPA? Do you have ACT or SAT scores yet?

It’s a 2.9 and no I don’t

Not sure what year you are in high school, but according to Smith’s most recent Common Data Set, there were no students admitted with a HS GPA between 2.50 and 2.99. I would say it’s not very likely.

No harm in trying. I would first call Smith and ask them. Smith like most selective/highly selective LACs use their own formal for weighting GPAs. For example my daughters’ private high school did not offer bonus bump-up points (aps etc). So your 2.9 might equate to someone else’s 3.6. The letter your high school college guidance department writes will help put your GPA in prospective. References, drive, involvement all play part in the decision process. Interview and visit campus.

If you don’t have good grades, then I would not recommend applying to Smith.

I don’t mean to be harsh, but this is a very vague post and doesn’t bode too well for you. Smith is really holistic, but looking for women who are passionate and driven, not just in “5 clubs.” Can you talk about how much you love what you do? Can you write killer essays? Also, while low SAT is no deal breaker (they’re test optional), low GPA is usually problematic. I’m sorry, unless you have a real hook or truly compelling essays and recs, it seems unlikely.
